Chemistry of medicines
For Year 10 Science
‘The chemistry of medicines’ is an interactive workshop teaching secondary students about the underlying principles of organic molecules in pharmaceuticals. It will invite them to consider careers in the health sciences with particular regard to pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences. The Outreach educator from Monash will visit schools and bring modelling kits for students to participate. Students will appreciate how fundamental chemistry relates to the effective treatment of diseases with medicines.
Aim
To provide an interactive overview of the chemistry related to medicines (molecular structure and functional groups). This will include exercises building molecular models of some simple organic molecules. Students will engage with a real drug discovery scientist to explore modern day therapeutics.
Expected program outcomes
The material is tailored to year 10 students and above who are guided through discussions and a
modelling activity.
Students will:
- Gain an understanding of molecular structure and functional groups
- Appreciate the elements commonly encountered in pharmaceuticals
- Explore the structures of some simple medicines
- Build models of some common organic substances
- Appreciate the process of drug absorption
- Consider the targets of medicines and future challenges in medicines research
