Scholarship recipients

Monash University and the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences offer a range of scholarships so that as many bright minds as possible can benefit from a Monash education. Here are this year's scholarship recipients.

Cyril Tonkin Scholarship View

Abbey Muller

This scholarship is for an outstanding pharmacy or pharmaceutical science graduate of the faculty who undertakes a higher degree by research in pharmacy or pharmaceutical science. The scholarship honours the selfless service of Victorian College of Pharmacy graduate Dr Cyril Tonkin, who graduated as a gold medallist in 1910 before becoming a medical practitioner in 1921. He was a lecturer and examiner at the Victorian College of Pharmacy from 1920 to 1953.

Cybec Scholarship View

Chloe Landy, Tobias Morris (commenced 2021)

This scholarship is awarded to enable students who face hardship or disadvantage to undertake postgraduate research studies at Monash. The scholarship is funded by Cybec Foundation, established in 2002, by Roger and Patricia Riordan, to foster their vision of a world in which people live and work in communities that naturally help and support each other to be the best they can be.

Vaughan Scholarship View

Ali-Reza Shokouhi (commenced in 2019)

The Vaughan scholarship offers additional financial support to elite PhD candidates in the chemical and biological sciences. This scholarship honours the extraordinary contribution of Dr Geoffrey Vaughan in the field of pharmaceutical sciences and medical research. He was the Dean of the Victorian College of Pharmacy (now the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences) from 1979-1985. In this period, he initiated a strong focus on research into drug development and health advancement, establishing global links that brought the faculty an international reputation and commercial success that MIPS continues to achieve today.

Alistair Lloyd Excellence And Leadership Scholarship View

Reyes Loh (commenced 2022)

This scholarship is awarded to a high-achieving and community-focused student commencing in the Bachelor of Pharmacy(Honours)/Master of Pharmacy degree. This scholarship is for students with strong leadership capabilities, enabling them to reach their full potential and make a real difference to people's lives and the future of pharmacy.

Natural Beauty Care Scholarship View

Viranya Vidhasuni Samarasinghe

This scholarship for excellence supports new or current students an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, who are experiencing financial disadvantage or difficult circumstances. This scholarship was established to recognise the generous support provided by the Natural Beauty Care Group.

Zachary Sum Scholarship View

Kasra Tahmasebian, Courtney Jane Perkins, Kate Ross, Lancelot Nii Sowatey Tetteh

This scholarship supports low income and/or rural continuing students enrolled in the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours)/Master of Pharmacy degree in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Stan Robson Pharmacy Equity Scholarship View

Fiona Wen

This scholarship is awarded to a commencing or continuing student in the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours)/Master of Pharmacy degree, on the basis of academic achievement, personal circumstances, low income and leadership potential. Dr Graeme Robson generously established the scholarship to honour his father, Stan Robson, a 1931 Victorian College of Pharmacy graduate, who practised pharmacy in Hamilton, western Victoria, for 60 years.

Hope Scholarship View

Huyen Thi My Tran (commenced 2021)

This scholarship is awarded to a commencing, high-achieving undergraduate student from a disadvantage financial background entering the Faculty to study pharmacy or pharmaceutical science. The Hope Scholarship was established at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to help support commencing students.

Robert Mainon Scholarship View

Fergus Thomas Carmichael

The scholarship, gifted by the Mainon-Caust families, honours the legacy of Robert Mainon by sharing his passion in helping others to achieve their potential. It is presented to a pharmacy student who has demonstrated service to the community and the pharmacy profession and the need for financial support.

Peter Beaumont Scholarship View

Wenxiao Song

This scholarship for Distinction is for a commencing student in the Bachelor of Pharmacy(Honours)/Master of Pharmacy. Alumnus Peter Beaumont established this scholarship to support academically talented students wishing to study pharmacy who may not have the financial means to do so. Peter comes from regional Victoria and a long line of pharmacists and other medical professionals. He graduated from the Victorian College of Pharmacy in 1957 and enjoyed a long career as a retail pharmacist, operating pharmacies in Shepparton, Aspendale and Seaford.

Michael Keith Halprin Scholarship View

Kothaimagal Uthayarajan

This scholarship for Distinction supports new or current students studying a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours), who are experiencing financial disadvantage or difficult circumstances. Pharmacy alumnus Michael Halprin comes from a family of pharmacists, which include his father and two uncles. He completed his traineeship under his father, and went on to start his own pharmacy in East Brunswick. Later, he joined forces with other Monash graduates to purchase pharmacies in Broadmeadows, Essendon and Ripponlea.

Thea Pärnamäe Rural Pharmacy Scholarship View

Lily Anne Cook (commenced 2022)

Thea Pärnamäe Rural Pharmacy Scholarship supports women to undertake an undergraduate degree in pharmacy. It is named in honour of Thea Pärnamäe, a pharmacist in Sweden who was born in rural Estonia in January 1927 and fled to Sweden in 1944 as a refugee of World War II. Upon completion of her secondary school studies in Sweden, Thea elected to enrol in pharmacy college because she considered a career as a pharmacist to be promising both in terms of personal and societal benefits. Thea was proud of being identified as a dedicated pharmacist and did prove to reap the benefits of her career as expected. Thea died in Stockholm, Sweden in November 2010. Thea's sister and niece, Mrs Malle Nogeste and Dr Kersti Nogeste have generously funded the bursary to honour Thea and their family’s strong belief in the value of tertiary education and giving back to the community.

Monash University Jubilee Honours Scholarship View

This scholarship provides access to a Monash education for talented students who may not otherwise be able to fund their studies. The Monash University Jubilee Honours Scholarship was introduced to acknowledge the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Monash University.

Pharmacy And Pharmaceutical Sciences Relocation Grant View

This scholarship is awarded to the highest-achieving Year 12 interstate students enrolling in the Bachelor of Pharmacy or the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science.

Monash Peer Mentoring Leaders Scholarship View

This scholarship is awarded to Monash Peer Mentoring Coordinators each year in recognition of their service and leadership in the peer mentoring community. Peer Mentoring Coordinators work closely with the Faculty and Portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) to manage key aspects of the program, and ensure that it meets the needs of mentors and mentees. Peer Mentoring Coordinators are involved in shaping the Peer Mentoring program and help build engagement within the Peer Mentoring community.

Monash Mentor Scholarship View

The Monash Mentor Scholarship recognises excellence of students participating as mentors in the Access Monash or Monash Peer mentoring programs. Mentors have the opportunity to develop key employability skills, while mentoring high school or first-year university students.

Vice-Chancellor's Ancora Imparo Student Leadership Program View

The aim of the Ancora Imparo program is to provide students with an understanding of the visionary and inspirational principles that guide current leaders and have guided leaders in the past. The year-long program provides leadership masterclasses in self-awareness, values and ethics, decision-making, communication, collaboration and positive social change.
