Classrooms have always been diverse places. But for much of the history of formal schooling, that diversity has been treated as something to be corrected or compensated for, rather than recognised and valued. For neurodivergent children and young people, in particular, this approach has had real consequences: higher rates of school disengagement, anxiety, exclusion, and long-lasting damage to self-concept.
In this TeachSpace article, Monash University experts explain what it means to adopt a neuro-affirming approach in educational settings – and share practical strategies for educators working across early childhood education and care settings, and primary, and secondary schools.
A shift in perspective
A growing body of research, advocacy, and lived experience is now pointing educators toward a different way. It starts with a shift in perspective – away from asking "what is wrong with this learner?" and toward asking "what does this learner need to participate and succeed?"
Why this matters
It is estimated that around 15–20% of Australians are neurodivergent. In a class of 25 students, this may mean four or five learners process information, communicate, learn, or experience the world differently from the neurotypical majority.
Historically, those differences have been framed through a medical model of disability which focuses on deficits, diagnoses, and the goal of "normalisation." Under this model, an autistic learner who communicates differently might be seen as having a communication deficit that needs to be fixed.
However many challenges faced by neurodivergent learners stem from a mismatch between the learner and the environment, rather than their neurology alone. The medical model defines impairment as a feature of the person. The social model of disability, by contrast, distinguishes between impairment (an individual's neurological or physical difference) and disability (the loss or limitation of opportunity caused by social and environmental barriers). In this view, the challenge is not the learner's brain, but whether the classroom is designed to support their way of learning.
Understanding these models matters for educators. The way we think and talk about disability and difference shapes every decision we make: how we design our learning spaces, how we speak to learners, how we write reports, how we plan for learning, and how we respond when a learner is struggling.
What is neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity is the idea that variation in human brain function and neurological development is natural and normal. The term reframes neurological differences – including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, Tourette syndrome, and others as natural variations in human development.
Neurodivergence refers to the individual experience of having a brain that functions differently from what is considered neurotypical. A neurodivergent person might think, learn, communicate, perceive sensory information, or regulate their emotions in ways that differ from their typically developing peers.
The neurodiversity paradigm recognises that some neurodivergent people have support needs. But it also recognises that those support needs are not the whole picture and that neurodivergent people also have strengths. Many of the barriers they face are created by environments and systems that were not designed with them in mind.
What is neuro-affirming practice?
Neuro-affirming practice applies the principles of neurodiversity to education. At its core, it means treating neurodivergent identities as valid and valuable and designing educational environments and experiences that genuinely include all learners.
This is a shift from tolerance to affirmation. It is not enough to accommodate neurodivergent learners grudgingly, or to celebrate neurodiversity in a poster on the wall while expecting all learners behave, learn, and communicate in the same way. Neuro-affirming practice requires us to genuinely examine our assumptions, our language, our pedagogical decisions, and our classroom design.
The good news is that neuro-affirming practice benefits everyone. Providing flexible learning environments and multiple ways for students to demonstrate their learning make education better for all learners.
Putting it into practice
Neuro-affirming practice does not require expensive programs. Often small adjustments and intentional shifts in how educators design learning environments, build relationships, and respond to learner differences can make a big difference.
Here are some examples:
Create a safe environment where all brains are welcome
Use picture books, stories, and group discussions that celebrate differences.
Model curiosity and acceptance of different ways of playing, thinking, communicating, moving, and learning.
Recognise and celebrate strengths
Learn about a child's favourite play activities, interests, and talents through observation and conversations with children and their families. Incorporate these interests into playful learning experiences.
Use a variety of teaching strategies and modalities
Combine stories, songs, movement, visual supports, and hands-on activities to support learning.
Build predictability and prepare learners for transitions
Use visual timetables and playful transition cues such as songs and chants before changing activities.
Support self-advocacy
Teach children simple ways to communicate support needs, such as "I need help" or "I need a break."
Create a safe environment where all brains are welcome
Establish classroom expectations that emphasise respect, belonging, and inclusion. Use language that values and celebrates differences.
Recognise and celebrate strengths
Use student interest surveys and strengths profiles to identify what students enjoy and do well. Connect classroom activities to these interests where possible.
Use a variety of teaching strategies and modalities
Pair verbal instruction with visual schedules, demonstrations, manipulatives, and technology.
Build predictability and prepare learners for transitions
Display daily schedules, provide warnings before transitions, and prepare students for changes to routines.
Support self-advocacy
Encourage students to identify learning preferences and ask for support when needed. Involve them in setting learning goals.
Create a safe environment where all brains are welcome
Foster a culture where diversity in thinking, learning, and communication is valued.
Encourage respectful discussion of different perspectives and challenge stereotypes about neurodiversity.
Recognise and celebrate strengths
Explore students' goals, aspirations, hobbies, and strengths through mentoring conversations, career planning, or goal-setting activities.
Use a variety of teaching strategies and modalities
Offer information through lectures, visuals, videos, practical activities, and digital resources.
Allow flexible assessment options such as presentations, videos, podcasts, or written tasks.
Build predictability and prepare learners for transitions
Share lesson agendas, assessment timelines, and advance notice of timetable changes. Use digital calendars and reminders to support organisation.
Support self-advocacy
Support students to participate in decisions about adjustments, learning plans, and future pathways. Encourage them to communicate their strengths, needs, and preferences.
Neuro-affirming practice is for every classroom
The neurodiversity paradigm invites us to stop asking "what is wrong with this learner?" and to start asking "how can we design schools that work for all brains?" That is a question worth asking – and the answers make education better for everyone.
