Educators from Monash’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (FPPS) have won two awards in the 2022 Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT), topping all other areas of learning across the University.
AAUT are the national awards for Australian educators across the higher education sector - from early career academics to those who have devoted a lifetime to teaching and learning.
Professor Paul White, FPPS Deputy Dean and the Faculty’s Associate Dean of Education, has won a ‘Teaching Excellence’ award in the Health category. Teaching excellence is the Awards’ highest category for individuals and it’s the first time an FPPS educator has received an AAUT award in this category.
Professor White has led transformational change in pharmacy and pharmacology education through his leadership role in the Faculty, ranked #1 in the world in Pharmacy and Pharmacology. Over 20 years, he has developed models that enable educators to engage students in deep, sustained learning and explicit skills development at scale, thereby impacting many thousands of students and educators around the world.
His many accomplishments include co-development of the faculty active learning approach with Dr Ian Larson, his highly cited concept-based problem solving model, and co-leading an international project involving educators from 22 countries which has identified consensus Core Concepts of his discipline. He also contributed an award-winning “four pillars” faculty approach to pharmacy and pharmaceutical science curricula, which has produced graduates with improved knowledge and skills as assessed by their employers.
Professor White said: “It’s truly an honour to be the recipient of this prestigious award, and to work with such amazing people doing the work that I love to do. I would also like to extend my congratulations to my talented FPPS colleagues who were also successful in the 2022 Australian Awards for University Teaching.”
In addition to Professor White, a team of FPPS academics won an award in the ‘Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning’ category. The Pharmacokinetics and Drug Delivery team includes Associate Professor Cornelia Landersdorfer, Dr David Shackleford, Dr Yassmin Samak and Associate Professor Joseph Nicolazzo .
The team won for the successful design and implementation of career-relevant simulations and their applications to real-life scenarios, for training pharmaceutical scientists in modern industry-relevant skills.
Associate Professor Landersdorfer said: “On behalf of my team, I would like to thank the AAUT for this recognition, along with our FPPS colleagues for their role in creating an environment that supports and fosters innovative approaches to teaching and learning.”
Professor Sharon Pickering, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Senior Vice-President (Education) said the FPPS wins reflect the Faculty’s strong commitment to educational excellence.
“On behalf of Monash I would like to extend my congratulations to our talented Monash educators who have been recognised across multiple categories at the Australian Awards for University Teaching. The well-deserved awards highlight the dedication and passion of our Monash educators,” said Professor Pickering.
