Professor Ben Boyd, who is currently operating in a dual role between the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS) in Parkville and the University of Copenhagen, funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, has been elected a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Sciences (AAPS).

Professor Boyd is one of eight AAPS members selected for “elevation to Fellow status in recognition of their professional excellence and sustained superior impact in fields relevant to AAPS’ mission: advancing the capacity of pharmaceutical scientists to develop products and therapies that improve global health.”

AAPS Fellows are nominated by AAPS members. The status of Fellow denotes professional excellence and sustained, positive impact on global health and the AAPS community.

AAPS states that Professor Boyd “is recognised as an established scholar at the intersection of drug delivery and colloid science, focusing on lipid and lipid self-assembly and the development of new methods to study these topics.”

His research has attracted significant national and international funding, including multiple grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and prestigious fellowships from the Australian Research Council and the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

One of Professor Boyd’s areas of focus is milk and what happens when we drink it. This research shows that fat particles in milk change from being oily when we drink them to becoming more like sponges when they arrive in our gut.

In 2020, Professor Ben Boyd and his team at MIPS - the Monash Pharmaceutical Milkshake Team - won a prestigious Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology. The team were acknowledged for breaking new ground in understanding how milk and similar systems can be used to enhance oral drug delivery. Their work has contributed to the development of novel formulations for progressing new safe drugs for children, including the first ever single dose cure for malaria.

The new Fellows will be formally inducted before the membership at PharmSci 360 on Sunday, October 22.
