New microcredential prepares pharmacists to perform Medication Management Reviews in healthcare settings across Australia
9 May 2024
From June 2024, registered pharmacists across Australia can access a new microcredential which will train them to perform Medication Management Reviews (MMRs) in home and healthcare settings, including aged care facilities where this specialised skill set is needed most.
The new Monash University MMR Training Program (MUMTP), developed by the world-leading Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (FPPS), is designed to credential pharmacists to perform MMRs in accordance with the new Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) Performance Outcomes.
Microcredentials are short, focused courses designed to provide in-demand skills and meet employer and industry needs.
As such, the MUMTP is the Faculty’s first microcredential and was designed and developed to equip pharmacists to contribute to the quality use of medicines, particularly for older Australians.
Director of Experiential Development and Graduate Education (EDGE), Associate Professor Steven Walker, said this is a fantastic opportunity for early career pharmacists to acquire a new skill in an area critical to ensuring the best outcomes for those taking one or more medications to manage ongoing health issues, particularly older Australians.
“When designing the MMR microcredential our ultimate goal was to develop a high quality, comprehensive learning experience to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to practice person-centred care,” said Associate Professor Walker.
“By tapping into the Faculty’s combined knowledge across aged care and pharmacy education and research we’ve designed a course enabling registered pharmacists, including recent graduates, to upskill in medication management, which is vital to the health and safety for those on medication regimens.”
The three-step intensive course involves a combination of self-directed online learning, simulated workshops and assessments, as well as practical supervised workplace learning.
The MUMTP is currently the only program accredited (with conditions) by the Australian Pharmacy Council that offers a recognition of prior learning pathway for currently credentialed MMR pharmacists and graduates who have already completed some of the course components through their internship.
