Alex commenced the Bachelor of Pharmacy/ Master of Pharmacy degree in 2018 after completing her VCE at Strathcona Baptist Girls Grammar School. Alongside her studies at high school, Alex enjoyed sport, student leadership and her passion- the performing arts. Alex has continued to extend herself beyond academic pursuits at university, engaging with the Access Monash Mentoring, the Student Ambassador and the Peer Mentoring programs. When not studying, you will find Alex at work in a community pharmacy, relaxing with friends or keeping fit with dance and pilates (iso-style). Alex is interested in pursuing a career in hospital pharmacy, with particular interest in the oncology and haematology space. She looks forward to commencing a six-week clinical research project over the summer break period, with the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Alex is passionate about learning ways to improve the lives of people with cancer by optimising their medication management.
Ayat is a dedicated and enthusiastic third-year pharmacy student. Having worked at a pharmacy as an assistant in 2016, she was inspired by the pharmacists in charge, their knowledge, professionalism and integrity as they radiated all the qualities a healthcare professional is ought to have. With encouragement from the senior pharmacist, she applied for the pharmacy course at Monash University where she is able to explore various career pathways and receive guidance from expert pharmacists on what it takes to be a trusted healthcare provider. The pharmacy course at Monash University is very diverse in terms of its academic units, providing students with unique experiences to put what they learn into practice, Ayat particularly enjoyed pharmaceutical compounding, a once week workshop to look forward to, and is now doing a placement at a compounding pharmacy where veterinary is a field pharmacists get to play a part of (animals get sick too, surprise!!) where she gets to practice what she learned and help the pharmacist in charge compound various products from ketamine lozenges to melatonin capsules and research ways to formulate controlled-release capsules, wishing it was as easy as it sounds.
This award acknowledges the student who has achieved the highest average mark in the drug discovery biology specialisation of the course. This award is proudly supported by Drug Discovery Biology, Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Chantel is currently completing the honours year of a Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science degree, specialising in Drug Discovery Biology. Her research seeks to understand how receptor localisation within the cell influences resultant signaling outcomes. Her passion for scientific research is driven by her curious nature and desire for a challenge. She is preparing herself for further research in the scientific field and a career where she can exercise her scientific inquiry. Outside the lab, she enjoys being able to share her love of science with students that she tutors and finds joy in teaching herself to embroider and tend to her ever-growing collection of house plants.
This award acknowledges the student who has achieved the highest average mark in the medicinal chemistry specialisation of the course. This award is proudly supported by the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Pamela Su is an international student from China, and she is in her honours year majored in medicinal chemistry. She was interested in chemistry when she was in Year 10 and she chose chemistry as one of her VCE units. She chose this course as she found the chemistry world was fascinating and full of mystery. After taking this course, she had more understanding of the importance of drug discovery and development to the world. After her honours year, she would like to be a PhD candidate at MIPS and become a medicinal chemist that can help people after that. Research is always hard as you are doing something that no one did before. Don’t be afraid of mistakes and failures as you will always learn from them.
This award acknowledges the student who has achieved the highest average mark in the formulation science specialisation of the course. This award is proudly supported by the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Having grown up in the Netherlands, Peije finished his high school in Australia, where he continued his interest in science. He chose to study the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science Advanced (Honours) as it allowed him to apply this interest in science to make an improvement to people’s lives, however small. His interests diversified during his degree, leading to him choosing to follow the Formulation Science stream. Where he was initially interested in a career in the pharmaceutical industry, he ultimately developed a passion for research, which was further cemented during his pre-honours project. His research into polymeric nanoparticles for diagnostic imaging sparked his interest in personalised nanomedicine, with applications in both therapy and diagnostic imaging. He therefore decided to perform his Honours’ project in this field, and hopes to kickstart his career in this field of research by starting a PhD in 2021.
This award acknowledges the first year student who has achieved the highest cumulative mark across the physical chemistry units. This award is proudly supported by the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Yuchen always has a different answer when she is asked about her favourite place in the world. She loves staying in the hospitals and watching how a medicine treatment is prepared. Looking back to the days in the hospital, she witnessed a lot of lives passed away and a lot of happiness when people’s beloved person was recovered. From that time, she wished to become a pharmaceutical scientist. As Yuchen gradually becomes stronger, the people she loves start to get weaker and sicker. Current treatments may not be enough for curing their diseases, however, Monash has taught her it is possible to help them in her own hands. The courses in Pharmaceutical Science help her develop a deep understanding about the pharmaceutical world and the respectful atmosphere here demonstrates scientists’ humanity. Studying in such an environment, she never regrets choosing Monash and deciding to be a pharmaceutical scientist.
Lingxiao Jiang is a second year student currently studying the course of Pharmaceutical Science at Monash University. Her interest in this course was sparked by her high school experiences and further encouraged by the academic achievements in both chemistry and biology subjects. Lingxiao is now a dedicated student who actively attends and participates in all of her university classes and in this process, has continued to strengthen her personal skills, such as time management, problem solving and communication. Lingxiao is committed to show great dedication towards further achievements in her study.
