MIPS researcher receives prestigious Rigshospitalet’s International KFJ Award

Professor Mark Febbraio

Professor Mark Febbraio from the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical sciences (MIPS) has received the 2022 International KFJ Award to the value of 1.75 million Danish kroner (approximately AU$360,000).

The award has been granted by Rigshospitalet, one of Denmark’s largest hospitals, in recognition of Professor Febbraio’s outstanding accomplishments in metabolic disease research and his ongoing collaboration with Professor Bente Klarlund Pedersen.

Named after Kirsten and Freddy Johansen, whose foundation donates the annual award, the International KFJ Award is presented to high-ranking researchers with existing collaborations with the hospital’s research communities.

Professor Febbraio, who heads the Cellular & Molecular Metabolism Laboratory at MIPS and is a long-time collaborator of researchers at Rigshospitalet, is widely recognised for leading ground-breaking research into the development of potential new treatments for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Professor Febbraio said: “I would like to thank the Rigshospitalet and the Kirsten and Freddy Johansen Foundation for this award and support for my ongoing research with my collaborators at Rigshospitalet. I have collaborated with Professor Pedersen’s group for almost 25 years. This award will allow us to continue our important work together.”

In 2020, Professor Febbraio was awarded the GSK Award for Research Excellence and the Eureka Prize for Scientific Research, and in 2021 was awarded the Society of Endocrinology International Medal.
