Working through the online module

This website presents three case studies involving Laura Wilkie (the pharmacist) with Pharmville residents Steve Park, Shirley Park and Tracey Wilson.

The case studies firstly present a pharmacist-patient consultation, then a guided tutorial. In the tutorial, the pharmacist explains how she deals with each patient and the reasoning behind her decision making.

You will see that to facilitate patient behavioural change Laura regularly refers to the ‘5As' for guidance. The 5As describe the five types of roles a pharmacist can perform to help patients change.

One of the big challenges with chronic disease management is developing a patient intention to change their behaviour. Laura will detail how she uses ‘Motivational Interviewing' (MI) to try and get patients to develop more positive attitudes towards taking control of improving their health.

Graphics about 5As and Motivational Interviewing (MI) appear throughout the tutorial to signpost what decision-making process guides the pharmacist at each point. You can also go directly to the 5A or MI aspect that you need to learn more about.

We have also provided links to key external websites containing official guidelines, protocols and patient resources so you can provide accompanying clinical advice in blood pressure management and smoking cessation based on sound evidence. This website is designed to be used in conjunction with guidelines.
