Celebrating our top academic achievers at our annual Academic Prize Giving event

After going virtual during the pandemic, the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences was thrilled to recently hold its Academy Prize Giving event in person once more.

Deputy Dean, Professor Paul White, welcomed students and their families, academic staff and sponsors to the awards ceremony and afternoon tea at the historic Cossar Hall.

The event is an opportunity to celebrate student excellence and leadership, and as usual, this year’s winners were the cream of a very competitive crop.

For the 2021 academic year, Alexandra Lotric received the Pharmacy Gold Medal for the highest score across all units of the pharmacy degree. Alex is undertaking her pharmacy internship with Alfred Health, and following this is keen to apply for a foundation residency program with the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences Gold Medal went to Yuchen Lu, who has developed a holistic and integrated understanding of the drug discovery pipeline and the global pharmaceutical industry during her Monash studies. She is now preparing to pursue graduate studies in pharmaceutical science in Europe.

Among other award winners were Dr Xin (Cindy) Zhang, who received the Mollie Holman Medal, and Dr Akosua Agyeman, who won the Vice- Chancellor’s Commendation for Thesis Excellence.

Student Experience Coordinator Alastair Thomas said it was fantastic to be able to return to an in-person event, with a key focus on course award winners and scholarship recipients.

“We were able to honour students’ academic achievements of 2021, which was a really tough academic year given the twists and turns of the pandemic,” he said.

“It was great to have family members and friends present to celebrate their success."

He said a key part of the event was being able to connect students to the faculty’s academic prize sponsors and scholarship donors.

“We're very grateful for our supporters’ financial generosity, but also the connection they provide our students to the wider pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences community."
