Cyril Tonkin Scholarship
This scholarship is for an outstanding pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences graduate of the faculty who undertakes a higher degree by research in pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences. The scholarship honours the selfless service of Victorian College of Pharmacy graduate Dr Cyril Tonkin, who graduated as a gold medallist in 1910 before becoming a medical practitioner in 1921. He was a lecturer and examiner at the Victorian College of Pharmacy from 1920 to 1953.
A stipend scholarship
The winner receives $33,000 (2023 rate) per year for three years of your PhD candidature plus a top-up of $10,000, with the possibility of applying for an extension of up to six months where you have valid enrolment and appropriate candidature time remaining. The income is equivalent to an RTP Stipend and MGES and is indexed each year.
Travel overseas
The scholarship will also cover national or international travel costs of up to $10,000, related to your research. Such costs could include accommodation and living expenses, medical and travel insurance, and reasonable out-of-pocket expenses. You're expected to travel economy class and declare other available funding sources.
When to apply
The scholarship is awarded every few years at the discretion of the Faculty. Applications for the 2024 scholarship will be considered in November 2023.
How to apply
Please follow the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences’ expression of interest process online. All scholarship applicants meeting the eligibility and criteria will be considered. There is no need to make a special application.
Eligibility
No age limit applies, but you must be:
- a graduate research candidate with the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Monash University
- deemed to be an outstanding candidate who is conscientious and willing to continue to follow pharmacy or pharmaceutical pursuits
- willing to undertake a PhD in pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences with us on a project contributing to the service of humanity
- an Australian citizen or permanent resident, who has resided, worked or studied in Victoria for the two years prior to submitting your application.

The scholarship must be taken up within 6 months of award
Assessment and selection
The Dean and the Board of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Foundation, who administer the Scholarship fund will decide on the award recipient. They will review advice from the Faculty Graduate Research Committee regarding students eligible and suitable for the Scholarship.
Winner's obligations
The scholarship is intended to promote leadership in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences and contribute to the development of pharmacy in Victoria.
The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Foundation Board receives annual reports on the winner's progress.
The winner must acknowledge the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Foundation Board and the Cyril Tonkin Scholarship in all communications, publications and public seminar or conference appearances.
The winner must also uphold the highest professional standards in his or her services to humanity.
