Investigating Antarctic Ocean Variability's Impact on Mass Loss
Supervisor: Johanna Beckmann
Support Offered: No fieldwork costs involved. Desk based research; will require own laptop
This project examines diverse Antarctic ocean variability patterns and their potential role in triggering mass loss from ice sheets. Discrepancies in future mass change projections among climate models are linked to distinct climate variability modes. Our study aims to characterize these modes, determine their timescales, and assess their influence on Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) mass changes.
Using data science and statistical analysis, we'll distill CMIP6 output data into tailored datasets. These datasets will drive an ice sheet model, helping simulate AIS responses under different scenarios. This interdisciplinary effort enhances our grasp of AIS dynamics, contributing to more accurate predictions of future mass changes.
Familiarity with scientific computing languages (Matlab, python, C/C++, fortran) or GIS software is advantageous.
