List of units offered

This page lists all mathematics and statistics units taught by the School of Mathematics, including those provided as foundational studies, those offered towards minors, majors and extended majors, and those offered primarily for students in courses offered by other faculties.

Note that most mathematics and statistics units have strict prerequisite requirements, as listed via the link to the University Handbook entry provided. Some units may only be available to students in specific courses. Students undertaking minor or majors must read these lists in conjunction with the precise requirements for that minor or major.

Level-one units

For students in the Bachelor of Science (or related course, including double degrees), note that neither MTH1010 nor SCI1020 form part of any level-one Mathematics sequence listed in listed at Part A(a) in the course requirements for that degree. These students also need to take into account the mathematics requirement listed at Part A(b) for the Bachelor of Science course.

Engineering units offered

These units are normally only taken by students in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or related courses:

  • ENG1090 Foundation mathematics (semester 1 only)
  • ENG1005 Engineering mathematics (semesters 1 and 2)

Note that ENG1090 is normally only taken if VCE Specialist Mathematics (or equivalent) has not been completed with a study score of at least 25.

Information Technology units offered

These units are compulsory for some courses, for example the Bachelor of Computer Science, but can often be taken by interested students in other courses:

  • MAT1830 Discrete mathematics for computer science (semester 1 only)
  • MAT1841 Continuous mathematics for computer science (semester 2 only)

Students who plan to complete any additional mathematics units are strongly advised to complete MTH1030 rather than MAT1841.

Level-two units

Science units offered

Note that MTH2010 (or MTH2015) can be considered as either a level-one or level-two unit, depending on whether other level-one mathematics units have been completed. In particular, students who have completed MTH1020 and MTH1030 in their first year of enrolment will normally take MTH2010 in their second year of enrolment.

All level-three mathematics units are offered in one semester only and almost all have strict prerequisite requirements. It is therefore very important to plan ahead for the order in which they are taken:

Engineering units offered

The following unit is normally only taken by students in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or related courses:

  • ECE3093 Optimisation estimation and numerical methods (semester 1 only)

Business and Economics units offered

Students in some courses in the Faculty of Business and Economics can take

  • ETC3510 Modelling in finance and insurance

within their course, or they may also be able to complete a broader range of mathematics units as electives including MTH3251, which is the equivalent unit for science students.

Special units

MTH3000 Mathematics research project level 3 is offered principally for high-achieving students. MTH3000 involves the completion of an individual research project chosen from a range of areas of mathematics and statistics, including fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, chaos, computing algorithm design, industrial mathematics, stochastic processes, number theory and logic, under the personal supervision of a member of academic staff in the School. At least two level-three mathematics units must normally have been completed with a sufficient level of achievement prior to MTH3000. Enrolments must be individually approved by the unit coordinator (for contact details see MTH3000 handbook entry), usually close to the start of the semester in which it will be taken. MTH3000 is offered in both first and second semester, and is also available in the summer semester in some circumstances. Link to MTH3000 project list.

In special cases, authorised on an individual basis, third-year students who are close to completing their course may also be able to count other assessable material towards a mathematics major as MTH3401/MTH3402 Special topics in mathematics. Normally, these units are limited to very high-achieving students and after all other available level-three mathematics units have already been completed. Students interesting in taking either MTH3401 or MTH3402 should in the first instance contact the unit coordinator (for contact details see MTH3401/MTH3402 handbook entry) for further information.
