Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Equity and inclusion means providing an equal footing for all individuals, regardless of gender, race, culture, or sexual identity. It means creating an inclusive environment which is based on the fundamental value of and respect for all individuals and their contributions to academia. Ultimately, academia cannot fully flourish until it welcomes the knowledge and capability of everyone.
The School of Mathematics is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive and respectful place for all students and staff. We value and support every member of our school, regardless of their gender identity, race, culture, or sexuality, and we stand in solidarity with our LGBTIQA+ community.
The School’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee seeks to progress equity, inclusion and diversity within the School of Mathematics, and to build and nourish an environment that accepts and welcomes all, in which people of all backgrounds feel appreciated.
The School’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee oversees several initiatives, including the GEMS (Gender Equity in Mathematics) mentoring program for students of underrepresented genders, and regular events on themes such as gender equity, diversity, and the experience of women and LGBTQIA+ mathematicians.
The School of Mathematics is a member of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance (ATSIMA).
