Chemistry Extended Majors

Opening

From 2027 we will be offering four extended majors within the School of Chemistry. As part of this, a number of new units will also be offered. These units can be taken as part of the relevant extended major or as standalone units. Please see details of our extended majors, and new units, in the expandable sections below.

To satisfy the requirements for an extended major you need to

i) complete 12 credit points of Level 1 chemistry units

ii) complete 60 credit points (10 units) from the units listed under the specific extended major.

*handbook entries for the units commencing in 2027 will be available from the 1st of October.

New units for 2027

	This is a Level 2, 6 credit point, Semester 1 unit. In CHM2711 – Green Chemistry, Health and Society, you will learn about What makes chemicals hazardous? How do we make chemistry more sustainable? How do we design chemicals and products that are both safe and sustainable? The handbook entry is here (available from 1st October 2026).
	This is a Level 2, 6 credit point, Semester 2 unit. In CHM2722 – System Thinking Approach to Chemistry you will step beyond the laboratory to explore chemistry's role in driving a sustainable, circular economy. Using systems thinking, you will learn to balance industrial progress with environmental and human health, evaluating complex chemical challenges through the eyes of consumers, industry, and regulators. 	This is a Level 2, 6 credit point, Semester 1 unit. In CHM2181 – Introduction to the Chemistry of Energy you will explore the science of energy and its role in creating a more sustainable world. You will be equipped with the knowledge to understand and contribute to the energy solutions of the future. The handbook entry is here (available from 1st October 2026).
	This is a Level 2, 6 credit point, Semester 2 unit. In CHM2180 – Materials for energy you will examine the chemistry of advanced materials and their role in powering the technologies of tomorrow. This unit sits at the intersection of chemistry, materials science, and sustainable energy innovation. The handbook entry is here (available from 1st October 2026).
