Given that mitigating and adapting to environmental change are global priorities, understanding and forecasting the distribution of diversity are among biology's most pressing goals. Physiological tolerances, ecological interactions, and historical events all contribute, in varying degrees depending on the taxon and scale of study, to the distribution of organisms. Sound strategies for mitigation and adaptation hence require the integration of these aspects of the biology of all organisms. Currently this forms the major thrust of my research. Thus I am engaged in biogeographic and macroecological studies, macrophysiology, spatial ecology, invasion biology and the integration of these fields, and maintain a strong interest and activity in the translation of science into policy, especially in the Antarctic.
