Research interests

Eric is interested in understanding how plant physiological processes, particularly photosynthesis and respiration, respond to major global change factors, including warming, elevated CO2, and drought.

His research combines controlled-environment and field experiments and has two main goals: (1) to improve the representation of photosynthesis and respiration in global vegetation models that are key to predicting future climate, and (2) to understand how the responses of these two metabolic processes to changing climatic conditions influence the growth and performance of crops and trees.

His research spans a diverse range of tree species and plant functional groups across major biomes, including boreal, temperate, and tropical ecosystems, while also examining important C3 (e.g., wheat) and C4 (e.g., maize) crops.
