Genetics - Recommended Streams
Examples of degree structures that a student could take with Genetics as their major
Below are presented four example suggested Unit combinations (‘streams’) that students with different interests might pursue:
1. General Genetics, 2. Molecular Genetics, 3. Evolutionary and Ecological Genetics
- Bold = core unit for major (+ compulsory SCI2010)
- Standard text underlined = suggested unit for stream
- Italics = optional unit for stream
1. General GeneticsThe general genetics stream gives a solid grounding in genetics. While other unit choices are flexible, it makes some recommendations for students wanting to take units that complement the core units in the Genetics major.
Year | Semester 1 | Semester 2 |
---|---|---|
1 | BIO1011: Blueprints for Life Choice of 3 other Level 1 units | BIO1022: Life on Earth Choice of 3 other Level 1 units |
2 | GEN2041: Foundations of Genetics MOL2011: Genes and their expression Choice of 2 other Level 2 units | GEN2052: Genomics and Population Genetics Choice of 2 other Level 2 units |
3 | GEN3040: Genomics and its Applications GEN3051: Medical and Forensic Genetics | GEN3030: Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Genetics GEN3062: Evolutionary and Ecological Genetics GEN3990: Research in Action Project 2Choice of 1 other level 3 unit |
1-SCI2010 can be taken in either semester 2-GEN3990 has a minimum academic performance prerequisite and can be taken in either semester |
2. Molecular GeneticsThe molecular genetics stream suits students interested in how genes function at the molecular level to control phenotypes. This stream recommends taking a level 1 Chemistry sequence and the level 2 Molecular Biology units. Other units that fit well with molecular genetics are units from BCH, MIC, DEV, or other areas taught by the School of Biomedical Sciences.

---|---|---|
1 | BIO1011: Blueprints for Life CHM1011 or CHM1051 Choice of 2 other Level 1 units | BIO1022: Life on Earth CHM1022 or CHM1052 Choice of 2 other Level 1 units |
2 | GEN2041: Foundations of Genetics MCB2011: Molecular Biology and the Cell Choice of 2 other Level 2 units | GEN2052: Genomics and Population GeneticsSCI2010: Scientific Practice and Communication1 MCB2022: The Dynamic Cell Choice of 2 other Level 2 units |
3 | GEN3040: Genomics and its Applications GEN3051: Medical and Forensic Genetics Two of: | GEN3030: Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Genetics Two of: |
1-SCI2010 can be taken in either semester 2-GEN3990 has a minimum academic performance prerequisite and can be taken in either semester |
3. Evolutionary and Ecological GeneticsThis stream suits students interested in how genetic variation underpins phenotypic variation and the ability of organisms to adapt and evolve. This stream recommends taking ecology and evolutionary biology units that give students a broader view of how genes and the environment interact.
Year | Semester 1 | Semester 2 |
---|---|---|
1 | BIO1011: Blueprints for Life Choice of 3 other Level 1 units | BIO1022: Life on Earth Choice of 2 other Level 1 units |
2 | GEN2041: Foundations of Genetics BIO2011: Ecology and Biodiversity Choice of 1 other Level 2 unit | GEN2052: Genomics and Population Genetics BIO2022: Evolutionary Ecology Choice of 1 other Level 2 unit |
3 | GEN3040: Genomics and its Applications GEN3051: Medical and Forensic Genetics One of: | GEN3062: Evolutionary and Ecological Genetics |
1 - SCI2010 can be taken in either semester 2 - GEN3990 has a minimum academic performance prerequisite and can be taken in either semester * - Note that BIO2060 is not offered after 2017 so that students starting from 2018 may choose another Level 2 unit in its place. |
