Bachelor degree (honours year)
Building on your expertise in performance, composition, ethnomusicology or musicology Music Honours is a prestigious program comprising a fourth year of coursework and research. You will have already completed an undergraduate degree with outstanding results, with a major in the relevant area in Music.
The program will integrate the development of practical skills (for those completing studies in performance or composition) with theoretical knowledge, culminating in advanced research training in your chosen field.
With extended knowledge in your chosen field, together with advanced skills in research, analysis, writing and other forms of communication, Honours will provide you with an advantage in seeking out professional roles.
You will choose a topic and undertake research working with a carefully selected supervisor who will provide you with individual guidance and academic counselling as you build your skills of research, analysis, writing and other forms of communication, as well as your practical skills. You will complete advanced coursework studies, attend or present at seminars, perform or compose and participate in other related activities. Completion of the Honours program will be via the completion and assessment of a thesis, which may also include a major creative work or series of works, a performance or a written critical commentary, and a related research paper.
You will be equipped to find employment in a broad range of occupations including the arts industry, librarianship, administration, business, government and private sectors, or in an educational context. Or you may wish to undertake further research study at the Masters or PhD level.

Minimum Entry Requirements (International students)
Qualifications
- An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with minimum overall WAM of 75.
- Applicants with an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with an overall WAM between 70 and 75 will be considered upon satisfactory completion of an interview. Applicants will only be invited for interview if there are places remaining in the course and a supervisor is available for their chosen area of study.
- Applicants must have completed 48 credit points of studies and obtained a distinction grade average (75%) or above in 24 credit points at level 3 within their chosen Honours area of study.
Double degree students: Applicants who are enrolled in a Monash double degree course and who have not yet completed the requirements for the two degrees, may be eligible to enrol in this honours program once they have completed 144 points of study, including the normal requirements for the Bachelor degree containing the intended honours area of study.
Double degree students are only required to obtain a distinction grade average (75%) or above in 18 credit points of studies in their chosen Honours area of study at level three.

This course consists of a combination of coursework and research. In the coursework component you will develop advanced theoretical and/or technical knowledge of your music specialisation and appropriate research methodologies. In the research component you will plan and execute a research project in your area of music specialisation under the individual guidance of an academic supervisor. Ethnomusicology and musicology students produce a thesis. Music composition and Creative music technology students produce two portfolios of original creative work and an exegesis. Music Performance students will produce two recitals and program notes.

Enrolment Obligations
International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than one third (33%) of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students must enrol in at least one unit that is not by distance and/or online in each compulsory study period unless the student is completing the last unit of their course.
