Medical Science and Medicine - M6011

The Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (MD) course is a five-year program of study with direct entry from high school. The first two years are campus based and the final three years are hospital and community based.

We are the only Victorian university to offer a direct entry medical program for students completing year 12 as well as a graduate entry program leading to the same degree – Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Practical experience at Victoria’s leading healthcare providers

You will have access to the largest healthcare provider network in Australia, which includes the Monash Medical Centre and The Alfred, Melbourne's major casualty hospital.

An emphasis on clinical communication skills and hands-on experience with clinical visits to medical practices, community care facilities and hospitals, is a feature of the Monash course.

Our MD Program

Our main focus is on improving outcomes for patients by making sure that medical students are strongly connected with our academic experts and clinicians.

  • Variety of learning styles Learning modes include lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and simulation sessions.
  • Research component You will undertake a scholarly intensive placement under the supervision of a researcher or clinician.
  • Integrated case learning (ICL) ICL sessions are small group tutorials that are structured around a clinical scenario.
  • Professional Development Professional behaviour, and its importance in health service delivery, is nurtured along with the development of other skills.
  • Early clinical exposure Interact with healthcare professionals through a variety of medical contact visits to hospitals and community clinics from early on in your degree.
  • Simulations and clinical skill workshops Simulations and clinical skills workshops are designed to provide practical hands-on experiences and authentic scenarios from clinical practice.
  • Final year training The final year of the course is based upon a trainee internship model.

Graduate entry medicine

We also offer a four-year graduate entry pathway into our medical program, if you’ve completed an approved undergraduate degree.

Accreditation

On completion of the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (MD) you are eligible for provisional registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the Medical Board of Australia. After serving a compulsory internship year of residence in an approved hospital, you become eligible for final registration in Victoria and other states of Australia.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements (Domestic students)

There are many ways to be considered for entry to a Monash University degree depending on your educational background and history. The below options reflect the academic requirements for the different applicant categories (or the highest level of education previously completed) to be considered for this Monash course. All applicants must satisfy equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites or equivalent tertiary units including the English language requirements.

Qualifications

Please Note: This Direct Entry course is not available to non-school leaver applicants. Only applicants who have completed VCE (or equivalent) no more than two years prior to applying, and who have NOT commenced any other form of tertiary study are eligible to apply.

Extra Requirements

Interview

Applicants may be invited (via email) to participate in an online interview. Only a set number of applicants will be invited for an interview and this selection will be based on a ranking of their UCAT (December round) or UCAT and aggregate score (January round).

Immunisation and infection requirements

In accordance with the National Health and Medical Research Council recommendations, this course requires that students comply with the faculty's Immunisation and vaccination policy and procedures.

These are designed to provide maximum protection against the increased risk of some vaccine- preventable diseases for students, patients and workers in a health care setting.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

As a healthcare student you will be required to wear PPE to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 on clinical placements. The removal of facial hair may be required for fit testing of masks as a lawful and reasonable direction by healthcare settings.

First Aid

It is highly recommended that students hold or attain by the end of first semester of the medicine program, a current registered level 2 or senior first aid certificate.

Assessments / written submission

Admission test for domestic applicants

All Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian Permanent Resident applicants are required to sit the UCAT ANZ (University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand) in July.

Indigenous Entry Scheme

Indigenous Australian applicants can apply for entry into the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine through the Indigenous Entry Scheme. Applicants will be exempt from competitive ranking and will instead complete a panel interview. The interview involves meeting with an all-Indigenous panel which includes academics, student engagement staff, and a community member. The interview replaces the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) and the University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand (UCATANZ). The course develops through theme studies in personal and professional development; population, society, health and Illness; scientific basis of clinical practice; and clinical skills, all of which come together in professional practice demonstrated in the clinical placement units.

Units are interdisciplinary, with themes woven through each semester.

You may be eligible to exit the double degree program and graduate with a Bachelor of Medical Science after three years of study and successful completion of 144 credit points, provided you have satisfied the requirements for that award.
