Navigating Implementation in Health Research: Qualitative Approaches, Stakeholder Engagement, and Priority Setting - PDM1199

This 2-day program* is for people interested in qualitative research and its application in implementation research or other projects. Participants will learn or enhance their skills and knowledge in qualitative study design, data collection methods and analysis broadly, but with an emphasis placed on how it intersects with implementation science. The course is suitable for both beginners and experienced qualitative researchers. It will be of interest to students, researchers, academics, clinicians and anyone seeking to apply these methods.

Facilitated by experts in qualitative and implementation research, in this in-person workshop you will learn about qualitative study design considerations in implementation context.

The course will cover selecting implementation and theoretical frameworks for healthcare improvement projects and understanding diverse ways to apply frameworks in qualitative research, qualitative data collection methods. How to analyse qualitative data in implementation research and projects, including engaging stakeholder in qualitative data collection and analysis, and meeting quality criteria in reporting and practice, will also be covered. This practical, interactive course will use published studies to explain good practices in qualitative data collection, analysis and reporting.

This program will be delivered over 2 days*:

Day 1: We will introduce qualitative research and methods and provide an overview of implementation science.

Day 2: We will build on the foundations of Day 1, focusing on greater depth on the application of qualitative research and methods and analysis and how these methods are applied in implementation research and projects.

*Attendees have the option of attending Day two only of the program depending on their level of experience.

What you will learn

Upon completion of this short course, you will:

Day 1

  1. Develop an understanding about the purpose and principles of, and possibilities for, qualitative research design.
  2. Understand and differentiate between various qualitative research methodologies and methods, including their philosophical underpinnings and practical applications.
  3. Formulate effective qualitative research questions tailored to different research purposes and contexts.
  4. Gain an overview of qualitative analysis methods, with a specific focus on understanding and applying template and framework analysis as types of thematic analysis.
  5. Discuss the role and use of frameworks in qualitative research with an emphasis on implementation frameworks.

Day 2

  1. Apply appropriate implementation frameworks/models to qualitative design, methods and different types of analysis, and explain when one framework/model might be used in preference to another.
  2. Discuss the different types of qualitative analysis that are most often applied in implementation projects. Appraise the strengths and weaknesses of each type of analysis and justify why one type of analysis might be more suitable to a project than another.
  3. Develop a research plan that aligns appropriate implementation frameworks/models with qualitative methods and analysis.
  4. Discuss recommended processes for preparing and writing up an implementation and qualitative study or project for publication.
  5. Discuss appropriate quality checks used when reporting qualitative research for publication.

Program structure

The online self-paced module will be provided one week before the workshop, followed by the one-day workshop either facilitated in-person or online depending on which course offering you register for.

  • Self-paced E-module (to be completed prior to facilitated workshop)
  • Day 1: Facilitated Workshop
  • Day 2: Facilitated Workshop
