Qualitative Research Methods for Public Health - PDM1122

This short course provides an introduction to the theories, concepts and practice of qualitative research. You'll gain practical skills in employing qualitative research designs, data collection and analysis. In particular, you'll learn how to meaningfully incorporate qualitative research with other research methods and study designs.

Who should attend

This course is suitable for clinical and allied health professionals, psychologists, public health researchers, and PhD candidates interested in using qualitative research methods.

What you will learn

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Match research questions to the appropriate qualitative research design (descriptive, phenomenology, action research, case study, ethnography and grounded theory).
  • Develop qualitative data collection processes (e.g., interview and focus group guides).
  • Describe principles of good research and ethical issues in qualitative research including recruitment, sampling, data collection and analysis approaches.
  • Describe the main types of data analysis approaches for qualitative research (content analysis, thematic analysis, narrative analysis, discourse analysis and grounded theory).
  • Apply thematic analysis coding techniques to raw qualitative data (e.g., interview transcripts).
  • Critique qualitative papers published in health services and public health literature.
  • Describe how qualitative research can be used in mixed methods research designs.

Day 1

  • Overview of qualitative research designs – descriptive, phenomenology, action research, case study, ethnography, grounded theory
  • Overview of mixed methods research

Day 2

  • Insider and outsider research
  • Consumer and community involvement
  • Using frameworks to guide data collection
  • Data collection overview and practice sessions (interviews, focus groups social media studies)
  • Rigour in qualitative research

Day 3

  • Overview of qualitative analysis approaches
  • How to code and coding workshop
  • Making sense of your analysis
