As organisations begin or continue their digital transformation journey, business information systems specialists will continue to be in demand—to design and manage programs of change, while acting as the bridge between software developers on one side, and business managers and users on the other.

At its core, business information systems is about understanding a business’ needs and goals, then tailoring IT solutions to meet them, in the most sustainable way. If you enjoy big picture thinking and solving complex problems, this is the course for you.

Business information systems is one of four flagship majors within the Bachelor of Information Technology, and is also available as a minor.

Keen to widen your focus and keep your options open? Complement this major with a minor, major or double degree in Business or Commerce, meaning you’ll have both the business acumen and technical expertise to give you a competitive advantage while exploring your passions.

What you’ll learn:

  • business analytics – utilising analytical tools and simulation software to assess problems, then modelling and designing new IT processes
  • practical skills in quantitative methods, data mining and visualisation to look for patterns and trends in data
  • how to communicate with both technical and business professionals

Your learning is firmly grounded in the real world, meaning you’ll understand information systems in practice. Throughout your studies, you’ll work on data and case studies drawn from diverse areas including health, life sciences, social networking, customer and web traffic, and scientific research to understand how business information systems can be applied in a variety of contexts and sectors.

Business information systems graduates are highly sought after in many industries, such as healthcare, software development, banks and financial organisations, consulting and government. Common roles include IT architect, IT business analyst and IT project manager. With seniority, become an IT consultant and potentially, chief information officer.
