Design of Experiments (DOE): Essentials - PDM1217

Design of Experiments (DOE) is a statistical method that is used to systematically plan, execute and interpret experiments to optimise changes and improvement in product and process development in an efficient manner. Implementation of this technique enables improved selections of the optimal levels of multiple parameters to achieve a desired result.

Who should attend

The content and application of the content in this short course is wide reaching in the pharmaceutical industry and can be utilised in different roles, for example, those in formulation, process development or product development.

What you will learn

  • Explain the principles and objectives of Design of Experiments (DOE) and demonstrate an understanding of the benefits of DOE in comparison to other techniques
  • Determine the effect of multiple factors through building a Plackett-Burman matrix
  • Identify multiple influential factors and calculate the effect of interactions between these factors through developed models
  • Apply Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for the assessment of statistical significance of different factors to enable data driven decisions in formulation
  • Implement Design Expert software to analyse DOE and build an Excel template for use as a simulation tool

Program structure

The short course includes online course modules, worksheets, assessments, and two full days (or four half-days) of in-person workshops run by our expert facilitators.

Dr Laurence Orlando

Senior Lecturer

Dr Orlando is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science and focuses on providing world-class pharmaceutical science education experiences. Her teaching approach is deeply informed by her 15 years of industry experience in pharmaceutical R&D, which she has leveraged to design and cultivate industry-aligned curricula that enhances student employability. Dr Orlando’s extensive industry network — spanning more than 2,000 contacts, including alumni — has resulted in a steady and high employment rate for her graduates.

How will this course benefit my career or professional development?

Design of Experiments is a widely applicable concept in the pharmaceutical industry and other industries, particularly in product and process development. DoE is used to efficiently investigate a number of variables to determine how they affect the outcome of a process. The ability to apply DoE is in demand as it can be used across multiple industries to optimise processes and reduce cost.

The knowledge and skills gained in this short course will equip participants with the ability to rationally design experiments to simultaneously test multiple factors using a minimal number of experiments, analyse results to identify influential factors and interactions, and perform statistical analysis to assess significance of their findings. In addition, participants will gain experience in the use of Design Expert software to analyse DoE, and the use of Microsoft Excel to create an experimental simulation tool.

Are there any technical requirements that I need to be aware of?

Participants need to have access to the internet and a computer to complete the short course.
