Journalism Internships and field schools
As a Monash journalism student, you have the opportunity to intern with industry professionals, build your portfolio with published work, and gain an international perspective at global outlets from around the world.
Journalism internships
Internships are a vital part of the Monash Journalism program – and work experience can count towards your degree. Each year, our students intern at a wide variety of leading urban and regional media outlets in Australia and abroad. These internships are an excellent way to build up a portfolio, make contacts in the industry and find out what it is like to be a journalist or to work in the media.
Journalism field schools
Monash Journalism offers unprecedented opportunities to engage with journalism on our study tours and field schools.
As part of their studies, students can travel to a global media hub to learn first-hand how the world’s leading newsrooms are adapting to change, honing their reporting skills and broadening their understanding of international journalism.
Our international field schools have visited Washington and New York, Hong Kong, Japan, and our study tours have partnered with non-government organisations to report from Cambodia and Nepal.
Student prizes
Monash Journalism students consistently receive professional recognition in the nationally coveted Walkley and Quill awards, which celebrate the best student journalism in Australia.
Our award winners for 2021 are:
Merve O'Keefe's mini-documentary 'The Road to Transformation'.
Produced for APG5135 Video Journalism, it has been awarded the Best Turkish Documentary at the Istanbul Film Awards and the Best Student Director at the Best Istanbul Film Festival.
MFJ's student-produced satirical talk show received seven nominations and won two awards at the 2021 Antenna Television Awards. We had three students in contention for Best Youth Personality - Patrick Scott, Tavleen Singh and Sofia Vamvakidou. Tavleen Singh was the winner. The Struggle also won Best Journalism in a Program.
