We are facing enormous world-wide challenges in the coming decades, including a rapidly growing population and one that is ageing quickly. The challenge is to achieve an adequate supply of food to meet United Nations Sustainable Development Goals such as ‘zero hunger’ and ‘good health & wellbeing’—all under sustainable conditions. To meet these challenges calls for a rethink of how we produce, process, market, and consume food.

The Monash Master of Food Science and Agribusiness is for students and professionals who wish to apply the latest knowledge and practices in the science and business of food at all operational and stakeholder levels, including personal entrepreneurship. It is aimed at those who wish to broaden and deepen their understanding and experience to work across public and private sectors of the food value chain. Graduates will become part of a network of professionals who develop and manage the supply of foods to meet individualised and population-based needs, with direct consequences for human wellbeing and enterprise.

The food industry will require greater global capability to address many challenges and opportunities, including:

  • Certain, sustainable and equitable supply of food,

  • Nutrition that promotes health and longevity,

  • Transformational and disruptive science and technology, and

  • Personalised consumer demands.

The application of existing and new technology by trained professionals will inform how these challenges are faced.

Unlike many food science programs, the Monash offering is unique because it is the only 'post-farm gate'-focused master’s degree in food in Australia. The course covers all aspects of food science, supply chain and marketing, including the future of food production and supply. You will learn about the value-addition that occurs along the supply chain, new technologies and trends that impact the business of food marketing, and the all-important interface with consumers. You will develop advanced knowledge in areas of your choice. 

The course culminates with a research project or a placement in industry. Industry internship placement is supported by Monash Food Innovation, which has a network of Australian and International industry linkages.

Entry Requirements

You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.

Minimum Entry Requirements (Domestic students)

Qualifications

Entry level 1: 96 points to complete – Duration: 2 years full-time, 4 years part-time

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in science, engineering, dietetics or health, with at least 60% (credit) average, or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

Entry level 2: 72 points to complete – Duration: 1.5 years full-time, 3 years part-time

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in food science or food engineering, and at least 60% (credit) average overall, or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

Entry level 3: 48 points to complete – Duration: 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time

An Australian bachelor honours degree (or equivalent) in food science or food engineering and at least 60% (credit) average overall, or equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

English requirements

Applicants must also meet the English language requirements.
