Laws and Arts - L3003

Law and Arts are both solid starts to your career, but combining them both into a Bachelor of Arts and Law double degree will enhance your options and professional expertise.

A defining feature of the Monash Law course is the large number of specialist units available, enabling you to optimise your study pathway in line with your professional aspirations.

Pair your Law degree with around 40 Arts majors and minors in subjects such as diverse as bioethics, criminology, international relations, holocaust or genocide studies. Or indulge your passion for the performing arts, language, music or theatre.

No matter where you’re headed, there is a Monash pathway to help you get there.

The Bachelor of Arts and Law double degree leads to two separate qualifications:

  • the Bachelor of Laws (Honours), and
  • the Bachelor of Arts.

Through a double degree, you will gain all the benefits of each degree course and be fully equipped to pursue a career in either field separately or to combine the two in your chosen work.

A Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts degree offers a solid foundation in the concepts, procedures and reasoning underpinning the Australian legal system and the research, analytical and communication skills of the legal profession.

Through your Arts studies, you will learn how to think critically and creatively, to resist easy answers or simplistic solutions, and to develop an ethical and intellectual framework within which to understand what it means to be human and how this changes over time.

As a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts student, you will also have the opportunity to study overseas and undertake work-based projects through the Monash Law Clinical Legal Education Guarantee, providing the real-world experience needed to transition into the workforce.

This course offers opportunities for students to focus on issues of policy and governance in addition to direct legal services. Our graduates have gone on to work across a range of areas including diplomacy and trade, human rights and international law, intellectual property and publishing, advertising, marketing, entertainment law and international business.

Course Handbook

As one of Australia’s top Law schools and a global leader in the Arts, Monash’s Bachelor of Arts and Law (Honours) double degree is designed for students looking to make a tangible difference in their communities and beyond.

From commercial and international law to community law or advocacy, a Monash Law degree will equip you with a solid foundation for wherever your career path leads. And coupled with a Monash Arts degree, you will gain the interdisciplinary knowledge to inform your legal work.

The practical nature of the Bachelor of Arts and Law (Honours) means hands-on training will start from day one, providing the confidence needed to apply your knowledge in diverse, real-world settings.

Your Bachelor of Arts and Law (Honours) degree will begin with fundamental training in the concepts, procedures and reasoning underpinning the Australian legal system before transitioning into more specialised electives like 'Negotiation and Conflict Resolution,' 'Media Law' or 'Animal Law'.

This freedom to craft a course that perfectly matches your interests and aspirations extends to an expansive choice of Arts majors and electives across the University. Choose from pathways including international relations, human rights, psychology or anthropology, providing cultural, historical and societal context to your legal studies.

This practical double degree offers the option of studying overseas at sites like the Prato Centre in Italy, gaining applied legal experience in a diverse setting. Our clinical legal education program also allows for hands-on professional experience as you complete your degree.

Upon graduation, you will have a double degree that is recognised by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board (VLAB) as satisfying the academic requirements for admission to practice in Victoria. No law degree enables you to practise law immediately. You must complete further training Practical Legal Training (PLT) or supervised legal training, be admitted by the Supreme Court of Victoria and obtain a practising certificate.

Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Art students have also gone on to apply their legal knowledge in other sectors such as media, international relations or the non-profit sector.

Combining technical expertise with theoretical frameworks, you will be equipped for a lifelong career no matter your goals.

HEAR FROM OUR GRADUATES

"I've taken a lot of gender studies electives in my Arts degree and learned a lot about feminist theory. I felt like the things that I had learned in my other degree really complemented my knowledge of the legal system in my Law degree.

When you're giving legal advice, you're not just talking about the law, you need to talk about all facets of the client's life. Gender dynamics really come into family law and impact the way that a client can take on your legal advice and follow it through. So I feel like my double degree really complemented my experience at Monash Law Clinics."
