Physical activity, health and wellbeing are such important pillars in a young person’s growth. With this degree, you’ll play a key role in developing these skills at formative times in their education journey.

What you’ll be qualified for

You’ll be able to teach children and adolescents aged five to 18 years, in both primary and secondary schools and will be equipped to teach as:

  • A generalist primary school teacher
  • A specialist health and physical education primary school teacher
  • A secondary school teacher with health and physical education as your two specialist teaching areas.

What you’ll be learning

You'll develop a diverse range of knowledge and skills as you build your understanding of health and physical education, and education as a discipline. In your health and physical education discipline studies, you’ll learn about the biophysical and behavioural foundations of health and physical education – and how to bring out the best health and wellbeing in your students and communities.
By looking at how people develop movement skills, you’ll build advanced laboratory and field-based skills in sport and exercise science, and be equipped to coach across games, challenges and sports.
This is all knowledge which you'll apply to your specialist teaching areas of health and physical education. In your education discipline studies at the primary level, you'll develop your knowledge of cross curriculum priorities and the curriculum areas you will teach such as: English and literacies, mathematics and numeracy, arts education, humanities, science, digital technologies, and health and physical education. While at the secondary level you'll develop an understanding of adolescent learning and development in a secondary education environment, as well as curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation.
With at least 85 days of professional teaching practice in primary and secondary schools, you’ll have a chance to put theory into practice and start your journey as an inspiring and future forward educator.

About teacher registration

Here’s what you need to know:

  • All our primary and secondary education degrees are accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) using national accreditation standards. This means your qualifications will be accepted in Victoria and all other Australian states and territories.
  • You must be registered with the (VIT) to teach in Victoria. This includes schools and early childhood services.
  • Check in with local teacher regulatory bodies about any extra requirements – whether you’re planning to work here or overseas.

Entry Requirements (Domestic students)

There are many ways to be considered for entry to a Monash University degree depending on your educational background and history. The below options reflect the academic requirements for the different applicant categories (or the highest level of education previously completed) to be considered for this Monash course. All applicants must satisfy equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites or equivalent tertiary units including the English language requirements.

Extra Requirements

Additional Information

Applicants must be 18 years of age by 31 March of the first year of the course in order to meet the mandatory requirements for placements. Underage applicants who cannot meet this requirement are not eligible for an offer. Please refer to information on mandatory checks and security clearances.

Compulsory: Extra requirements for application and admission

Situational Judgement test

Applicants must sit a Situational Judgement test to be eligible for entry into this course. The Situational Judgement test is a requirement for many of the initial teacher education courses in Victoria. It is an online test designed to assess an applicant's personal and professional attributes.

Extra requirements for enrolment and graduation

National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE)

It is essential that you achieve the standard in the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students.*

You must:

  • make your first attempt at completing the test by the time you have attempted 24 credit points of study; and
  • achieve the test standard by the time you have attempted 48 credit points of study.

If you do not achieve the standard in both the literacy and numeracy components of the test within the stipulated time you are at serious risk of exclusion from the course.

This applies unless a different completion date has been determined in consultation with the faculty's Literacy and Numeracy Development Team.

* This requirement applies to students in all specialisations

Recognition of First Nations language proficiency by the relevant cultural authority or a formal qualification in an Australian First Nations language is an acceptable alternative standard. (Noting this alternative standard is in lieu of all LANTITE requirements).

Professional experience
You must satisfactorily complete supervised professional experience as required for your specialisation.

Before participating in professional experience in an education setting, you must:

  • meet specific security clearances (eg Working With Children Check) that apply in the state/territory/country where the professional experience is being undertaken
  • meet immunisation requirements
  • complete professional experience orientation provided by the faculty.

Professional experience expenses

You are responsible for any expenses incurred while undertaking professional experience (e.g. transport, equipment, immunisations, security checks and clearances).
