Information and communications technology is driving many of the changes in science, so it's an exciting time to combine the study of computer science with any of the emerging or traditional areas of science. Science also increasingly relies on computing in collecting, storing and analysing large volumes of data such as computationally intensive simulations of new physical phenomena.

This double degree course will provide you with a highly transferable set of skills and knowledge. It develops your scientific thinking skills, including critical analysis and problem-solving ability, and adds computational and complex IT skills, maximising opportunities for employment related to information technology and science.

This course leads to two separate degrees:

  • the Bachelor of Science,


and depending upon your specialisation,

  • the Bachelor of Computer Science or
  • the Bachelor of Computer Science in Data Science.


You will gain all the benefits of each degree course (see Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Computer Science) and be fully equipped to pursue a career in either field separately or to combine the two in your chosen work.


You will be presented with some very exciting career choices. Depending on what area of science you chose to specialise in your career options could include geodynamics, meteorology, environmental and 3-D modelling, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics and biocomputing, cryptography, robotics, financial and statistical analysis and modelling, biomedical computing, and any field where scientific data management (storage, analysis, manipulation and presentation) is important.

All applicants must satisfy the VCE subject prerequisites demonstrating high performance in Year 12 or equivalent in English and in one unit of mathematics.

VET Diploma graduates: To be considered, applicants who have completed VCE or its equivalent and who are applying with a science-based diploma will require an average result of at least 60%. Applicants who have not completed VCE but have completed a science-based diploma will require an average result of at least 70%. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements.

VET Certificate IV graduates: To be considered, applicants with science-based certificate IV level studies will require average results of at least 80%. For applicants who have also completed VCE, both qualifications will be considered. No credit is granted for these studies.

VTAC Personal Statement Compulsory: Applicants must complete the VTAC Personal Statement.

University: Two single units at an Australian higher education institution satisfy minimum entry requirements, but more units may be useful for selection, especially in science areas. Applicants should have at least a 60% average in their studies.

Studies must have been completed within five years of intended commencement.

Enrolment Obligations

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than one third (33%) of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students must enrol in at least one unit that is not by distance and/or online in each compulsory study period unless the student is completing the last unit of their course. Double degree courses allow you to study towards two different degrees at the same time, and graduate with two separate qualifications. And because a required subject in one course can count as an elective in the other, our double degrees take two years less than if you studied for the two degrees separately.

The Bachelor of Science is a comprehensive course, structured in three equal parts. In the double degree course you complete:

A. Science specified study

This will provide you with the mathematical or statistical foundation for your study of science and address the nature of science and its communication. It will also expose you to several science disciplines contributing breadth to your understanding of science and giving you the opportunity to learn about several disciplines before finalising your choice of major.

B. Science listed Major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will learn to develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the discipline.

The Bachelor of Computer Science course is a specialist course that develops through the themes of Computer science foundation study, professional skills study, specialist discipline knowledge, problem solving and analytic skills study, and professional skills study which come together in applied practice.

A. Computer science foundation study

This study will develop your understanding of the role and theoretical basis of computer science and computational methods.

B. Professional skills study

This study develops professional skills by providing an understanding and appreciation of the ethical and professional guidelines applicable to computer science; developing the ability to work as an effective team member; developing the ability to communicate proficiently and appropriately for professional practice; and developing formal project management skills.

C. Specialist discipline knowledge

This study will develop your in-depth knowledge of the specific computer science methods of your specialised field within computer science.

D. Problem solving and analytical skills study

This study will develop your ability to apply appropriate methodologies in computer science and develop efficient computational solutions. It develops strong problem solving skills and the ability to apply analytical thinking.

E. Applied practice

The above knowledge and skills are integrated and consolidated in applied practice as demonstrated in a computer or data science project, and in some cases in an industry-based learning placement.
