Future urban life
As urbanisation transforms our world, this degree explores how ‘urban life’ permeates cities and beyond, transforming neighbourhoods, towns and regions. It fosters design that addresses the impacts of - climate change, resource depletion, uneven development - and helps improve the quality of life for diverse human and non-human communities.
You will design across multiple scales and typologies: inclusive neighbourhoods, vertical innovation hubs, 15-minute towns, cyber-physical places, historic quarters, smart mobility networks, amphibious waterfronts, sponge cities, and agropolitan bioregions.
Evidence-informed creativity
The degree is grounded in an ethos of evidence-informed creativity, combining rigorous analysis, imagination and real-world engagement.
This ethos prepares you to engage with the pulse of urban life - sensing, documenting, analysing, and interpreting its complexities to drive your creative work. Advanced digital tools - such as data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) - are harnessed to empower your design practice.
Collaborating with city-makers in government, industry, civil society, and local communities, you will create innovative and informed visions for urban life in Jakarta, Indonesia, Asia and beyond.
Interwoven curriculum
Our curriculum combines three essential approaches to form a cohesive learning experience:
- Theory-practice integration: Connecting ideas and actions through diverse media - writing, drawing, three-dimensional modelling, and cartography - within interactive formats such as seminars, studios, and exhibitions.
- Immersive learning: Combining campus-based education with empirical fieldwork, international studies, and hybrid in-person and virtual collaboration.
- Research-driven inquiry: Developing analytical capacities, critical thinking, and a transdisciplinary outlook as the foundation for leadership and lifelong learning.
Flexible study options
The Master of Urban Design may be taken full time or part time, with units delivered via a combination of face to face and online modes.
Graduates of the complete Master of Urban Design will be equipped with the conceptual, creative and technical skills to develop integrative solutions to the complex urban challenges resulting from climate change, environmental degradation and development inequalities.

If you’re applying for either Level 2 entry option, you’re required to provide:
Project Showcase: This should showcase your interest in the many facets underpinning urban issues, which can be derived from your prior studies and/or career to date. The project showcase should be described in visual (drawings, renderings, photographs, diagrams) and textual (essays, blogs, captions) form.
If you’re applying on the basis of work experience, you’re required to provide the following:
- A detailed curriculum vitae, outlining your employment history along with detailed job descriptions.
- Two references from a current or previous employer, on official letterhead, supporting the responsibilities outlined in the CV.
English requirements
Applicants for this program must meet English Level A.

Current Monash students
You may apply to transfer from another Monash course. Transfers are a competitive process. You may apply mid-year for available courses however consideration will be given as to whether you will be able to follow your course progression.
Please note that if you apply for a course transfer, you should still enrol in your current course as if you were continuing so as not to jeopardise your enrolment in the Faculty if your transfer application is unsuccessful. More about Course Transfer.
Self assess for credit eligibility
If you have completed any relevant previous study, work experience or other learning, you can be assessed for credit towards a course at Monash. You may check your credit eligibility using the "Credit search" link on the Credit for prior study page.
Fees
The annual tuition fee for the master’s program is IDR 224 million for Indonesian students and IDR 248 million for international students.
To graduate with a Master of Urban Design degree, students must complete 96 credit points, with a total program cost of IDR 448 million for Indonesian students and IDR 496 million for international students.
Note: Fees are to be paid prior to course commencement and subject to change annually.
