Architecture - F6001

Architecture

Professional entry master's degree

Studying a Master of Architecture sets you up to be an integrated urban professional – an agent of change with the vision to design progressive architecture that responds to the dynamic needs of contemporary society.

Whether you've completed a bachelor degree in architecture or another field, our Master of Architecture enables you to meet the academic requirements to register as an architect.

Monash’s Master of Architecture is accredited by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) and the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA).

The Monash Master of Architecture is distinguished by our rigorous and creative engagement with live projects, focusing on challenges facing our urban environments and communities. We set you up with the skills to make a difference.

This course addresses the timely and pressing challenges of our age and our profession, in an enquiring, sophisticated, creative, ethical, inclusive and material way. Through research-led design studios and supporting professional subjects, we’ll provide you with the confidence and capabilities to respond to the complexities of the world.

Our Master of Architecture has a strong emphasis on studio-based learning which replicates the way many architectural and design practices operate. You’ll spend over half your degree in the studio where you’ll be taught by Monash academics and leading architectural practitioners. You’ll work on projects engaged with the community or embedded within an architectural practice, designed to set you up for future success after you graduate.

Each semester you can select studios from a wide range of architectural issues and challenges including housing, urban design, digital practice, evolving construction methods and design speculation, which allows you to follow your passions and interests.

Our studio-based learning operates at a range of scales, working with diverse teams and in live social and cultural contexts to help shape our evolving built environments. With commitments to social and spatial justice, environmental sustainability, and the creation of thriving communities, we equip our graduates to operate as change agents through architectural practice.

Your studies will culminate in the final year with a self-directed project where you get to demonstrate your knowledge and learning. You’ll come out of your Master of Architecture degree with a body of work that demonstrates your capabilities and competencies in preparation for the workplace.

Architecture-focussed electives
Alongside the studio, you’ll get to select from a range of advanced architectural study units to complement your studio-based practice, enabling you to completely immerse yourself in architectural practice, research and ideas. These units will introduce you to the methods and tactics of architectural design research and engage with the multidisciplinary socio-cultural, political, economic, historical, theoretical and technical dimensions relevant to contemporary architecture and urbanism.

Master’s room
As part of our creative community at Monash, you’ll have access to the master’s room, a dedicated student-led space for the exclusive use of Master of Architecture and Master of Urban Planning and Design students. The room is conveniently located in the architecture building at Caulfield campus and is a place for you to meet, collaborate and creatively solve problems with your fellow students.

We offer two entry points into the Master of Architecture.

Two-year program
If you’ve studied architecture at undergraduate level, the two-year master’s program is for you. This course builds upon your undergraduate knowledge to provide you with an advanced understanding in architectural design and research.

Three-year program
The three-year Master of Architecture program is designed for students who come from non-architectural undergraduate degree. The first year of the course is designed to bring you up to speed and give you the confidence and practical skills to be successful in your degree and architectural practice.

Upon completion of your degree you’ll be able to work as a graduate to meet the professional practice requirements of the Architectural Registration Board of Victoria. This professional pathway is accredited by Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) and allows you to work as an architect in many different countries.
