About registration and accreditation

Here’s what you need to know:

  • You need to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) to teach in a Victorian school. This includes preschool and kindergarten.
  • Check in with local teacher regulatory bodies about any extra requirements – whether you’re planning to work here or overseas.
  • Specialisations in early childhood education are accredited by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). This means you can work in licensed preschools and childcare centres in Victoria, and your qualifications are accepted in most other states and territories.
  • All primary and secondary education specialisations are accredited by the VIT using national accreditation standards. This means your qualifications will be accepted in Victoria and all other states and territories.

The Monash Master of Teaching is a graduate entry course that prepares you for a career as an educator in the early childhood sector, primary schools or secondary schools - or even a combination of these. The Master of Teaching is suited to applicants who have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and are seeking a teaching qualification.

Entry Requirements

You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.

Minimum Entry Requirements (International students)

Qualifications

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with at least a credit (60%) average. Admission into the course is competitive and may require a higher overall average than the minimum requirement.

In addition to the above:

Early childhood and primary education

Students applying for the dual-sector Early Childhood and Primary Education specialisation must have at least one year of full-time equivalent study relevant to one or more learning areas of the primary school curriculum. Most undergraduate degrees cover one or more of these required learning areas, meeting this requirement.

Primary education

Students applying for the Primary Education specialisation must have at least one year of full-time equivalent study relevant to one or more learning areas of the primary school curriculum. Most undergraduate degrees cover one or more of these required learning areas, meeting this requirement.

Primary and secondary education specialisation

Students applying for the dual-sector Primary and Secondary Education specialisation must also have at least one year of full-time equivalent study relevant to one or more learning areas of the primary school curriculum and at least a major study in one secondary teaching area. Most undergraduate degrees cover one or more of these required primary learning areas, meeting this requirement.

Secondary education specialisation

Students applying for the Secondary Education specialisation must have appropriate discipline studies to qualify for two teaching specialist areas or one double teaching specialist area, with at least a major study in one secondary teaching area and a second teaching area comprising at least a minor study.

Major study: equivalent to 6 units (36 credit points) of sequential discipline study over 3 years with no more than 2 units at level 1 and a minimum of 2 units at level 3.
Minor study: equivalent to 4 units (24 credit points) of sequential study over 2 years with no more than 2 units at level 1.

Casper

All applicants must sit Casper unless they are applying for the Master of Teaching in Early Childhood Education only. Casper is a requirement for many of the initial teacher education courses in Victoria. It is a non-cognitive online test designed to assess an applicant's personal and professional attributes. The test is designed to evaluate an applicant's suitability for the teaching profession.

Extra Requirements

Applicants will be required to undergo a Working With Children Check before being able to carry out professional experience placements.

All students enrolled in Australian initial teacher education courses must achieve a satisfactory standard in the National Literacy and Numeracy Test prior to graduating.

Enrolment Obligations

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than one third (33%) of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students must enrol in at least one unit that is not by distance and/or online in each compulsory study period unless the student is completing the last unit of their course.
