Your qualification will be a Bachelor of Communication Design

Be a bold, imaginative communication designer with our Monash degree.

Communication designers use visuals to strategically communicate information and ideas. They help shape the visual language of society through creative visual narratives and can help change attitudes and behaviours.

In this specialisation, you’ll explore a breadth of communication possibilities and develop an understanding of how communication designers create and contribute to the language of contemporary visual culture. You’ll be exposed to a broad range of creative communication processes and undertake studio-based projects across both print and digital media platforms, developing skills in narrative structure, typography, image construction and manipulation, production methods and technologies, along with the planning and management of communication design outcomes.

Communication designers work in unexpected places like improving health outcomes, improving transportation and wayfinding, designing new services, creating new sustainable responses and even helping organisations adjust to change.

In our communication design studios, you’ll develop your technical ability in hand-generated drawing and computer-aided design applications like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. You'll be encouraged to experiment with tools and techniques to solve specific design challenges using image making, typography, analogue and digital media, UX and more. In the workshops you'll learn how to work with different materials and learn how to use digital tools like laser-cutters, 3D printers, robotics, coding and animation software.

Group design projects will teach you how to think like a designer, develop the strategic skills to identify design problems and work your way through the design process. Working with a range of industry clients on real projects, you will gain first-hand experience of professional practice and build a folio of work that will support your entry into a design career.

Communication design is not just about creating work that looks good: design can make a valuable contribution to visual culture, as well as enhancing social engagement and supporting economic and environmental futures. You’ll use your creative and technical skills to create visually arresting graphics, communicate complex ideas combined with the professional skills to handle large and complex projects. You could be hired to work as the designer for one company, be part of a design agency, or work independently and take on clients as a freelancer.

You’ll graduate with a Bachelor of Communication Design which is recognised by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA).
