Your fastest pathway to a MPH

Medical specialists and recent medical graduates may be eligible for accelerated course entry, allowing completion of the MPH in as little as one year (full time), depending on prior qualifications.

IMPORTANT:  This course is only available to international students in ‘on-campus’ mode. Please note that ‘on-campus’ mode comprises a mix of online learning and on-site teaching.

For most units, the majority of contact hours are facilitated through the University’s online learning platform, with additional face-to-face contact during designated study days at the School of Public Health & Preventive Medicine or at the Alfred Centre in Melbourne.

The Master of Public Health fulfils the core discipline requirements of a Master of Public Health for the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine, Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

As a strong foundation for career progression, the course prepares graduates for senior and leadership roles across public health and the broader health system. Career opportunities include:

RACMA Fellowship Training Program

This course is approved by the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA) for candidates undertaking the RACMA Fellowship Training Program. Medical graduates seeking to meet the requirements for RACMA Fellowship must complete the following units:

  • MPH5213 Research methods
  • MPH5265 Law for health systems
  • MPH5266 Clinical leadership and management
  • MPH5268 Financial management in health care
  • MPH5269 Foundations of health policy
  • MPH5272 Principles of health systems

You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.

Minimum Entry Requirements (Domestic students)

Qualifications

Depending upon your prior qualifications and experience you will be eligible for entry credit which reduces the duration.

Entry Level 1:
96 points to complete
Duration: 2 years full-time, 4 years part-time

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a non-cognate discipline with at least a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60% or qualification and experience approved by the faculty.

Entry Level 2:
72 points to complete
Duration: 1.5 years full-time, 3 years part-time

One of the following with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 60%:

  • an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline with a research Honours, or
  • a medical degree, or
  • a Monash University Bachelor of Public Health, or
  • a Monash University Bachelor of Public Health Science, Monash University Bachelor of Health Sciences, or Monash University Bachelor of Biomedical Science with 36 credit points of specified public health units (refer to additional requirements);

    OR

  • An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline with at least a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60% and a minimum of two years of relevant work experience.

Entry Level 3:
48 points to complete
Duration: 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time

An Australian Master of Philosophy or PhD or doctoral degree or AQF level 9 qualifications (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline and a minimum of two years of relevant work experience.

OR

An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline and a minimum of two years of relevant work experience

AND

Part 1 of a specialist medical training program or current Fellowship of a specialist medical college recognised by the Medical Board of Australia

AND

current registration with AHPRA or equivalent registration approved by the faculty.

English requirements

Applicants must also meet the English language requirements.

Monash University Bachelor of Health Sciences, Monash University Bachelor of Public Health Science, and Monash University Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences requirement for 72CP entry;

36 points as follows:

  1. One of: HSC2300 Health promotion and disease prevention OR PBH2003 Culture, society and health
  2. One of: PBH2004 Health, law and ethics, PBH2005 Health program planning, PBH2006 Treatments and technologies, PBH2008 Health policy and politics
  3. Two of: PBH3001 Clinical research methods, PBH3002 Disease prevention and control, PBH3003, Environmental determinants of health & disease, PBH3004 Health program evaluation, PBH3005 Social and behavioural sciences
