Achieving Potential Scholarship for Distinction

The donor-supported East Gippsland Medical Scholarship has been established to recognise students studying medicine who have demonstrated a commitment to health in the Wellington and East Gippsland Shire. The East Gippsland Medical Scholarship will offer recipients a supported pathway to potential by factoring in living expenses, community leadership opportunities and experiences that embed students into the Wellington and East Gippsland Shire community. The Scholarship will be made available to 4th year rural medical students who are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and/or are from low socio-economic backgrounds.

I very much enjoyed my placements in Sale and Bairnsdale and felt welcomed by the East Gippsland community. I am very grateful to receive this scholarship which will greatly assist with the costs of studying medicine, particularly in relation to accommodation and travel expenses, giving me more time to focus on my placements and studies.

Am I eligible?

You must be one of the following:

  • An Australian citizen
  • A New Zealand citizen
  • Australian permanent resident
  • Australian humanitarian visa holder

You must meet the following criteria:

  • Current student enrolled or intending to enrol in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at a Monash campus in Australia.
  • A year 4C medical student enrolled in the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine who are from, or have resided in, the Wellington or East Gippsland Shire.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health in the Wellington and East Gippsland Shire, as shown through preferencing rural placements in the Wellington or East Gippsland region for at least one semester of Year 4C and intention to preference the region for at least half of Year 5D.
  • Experiencing financial hardship.

Benefits

  • up to $6000 per annum for a maximum of two years.

Selection criteria

To retain this scholarship:

  • You must maintain a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60 each semester.
