Rhodes scholarship (Australia)
The Rhodes Scholarships programme offers more than 100 fully-funded scholarships each year to students from around the world for postgraduate study at the University of Oxford - one of the world's top universities.
How many scholarships are available to Australian students?
Each year, nine scholarships are awarded to scholars from Australia: one from each state and three from the ACT, other Territories and nominees of State Selection Committees.
Benefits of a Rhodes scholarship
A Rhodes scholarship is valued at between A$75,000 and A$125,000 depending on course duration and includes:
- All Oxford University and College fees, including visa costs
- A personal stipend – for the 2023/24 academic year, the stipend is £19,092 per annum (£1,591 per month) (approx. AUD$37,000)
- Private health insurance for the UK’s National Health Service
- One economy-class, return airfare.
Who should apply?
The programme looks for young leaders of outstanding intellect and character who are motivated to engage with global challenges, committed to the service of others and who show promise of becoming value-driven, principled leaders for the world's future.

How to apply for a Rhodes scholarship?
Applications open in June and close in August. Exact dates in the eligibility criteria (pdf).

To apply, you must:
- Meet the eligibility criteria (pdf).
- Meet the entry requirements for your course choice at Oxford University
- Supply five referees. These must be three academic referees, plus two character referees who can verify your extra-curricular activities.
- Write a personal statement (1000 words).
- Write an academic statement that outlines why you wish to study your chosen course at Oxford (350 words).
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview.
