Biomedical and Health Science - M6003
Master's degree
The Master of Biomedical and Health Science is a specialised coursework degree built around the key research strengths of the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, home to more than 700 world‑class researchers. This program equips you with the advanced scientific, analytical and research capabilities needed to contribute to biomedical discovery, translational research, and innovation in the health and biotechnology sectors.
You’ll build expertise in contemporary research methodologies, biomedical theory and laboratory techniques, with training that spans areas such as cancer biology, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, metabolism and obesity, regenerative medicine, and neuroscience. Whether you’re seeking to extend your scientific background, transition into a new biomedical discipline, or prepare for graduate research, this degree provides the foundation to pursue high‑impact career pathways across research, industry and health innovation.
Study your way
Develop work-ready skills
Standout features of the degree include an 8-9 month research lab placement in a lab of your choice followed by a two-month professional internship placement, giving you firsthand experience in workplace culture, scientific communication, and the translation of biomedical discoveries from bench to market. This internship builds professional confidence and enhances employability, with placements available in research institutes, biotech organisations, pharmaceutical companies and Monash’s own partner laboratories
Specialisation in your chosen discipline
Tailor your degree by choosing from six specialised areas of biomedical science, each aligned with active research programs:
- Cancer biology
- Cardiovascular disease
- Neuroscience
- Infectious diseases and population health
- Metabolism, appetite and obesity
- Regenerative medicine and stem cells
You’ll undertake a research project within your chosen specialisation, allowing you to deepen your domain expertise and contribute to real scientific discovery.
Develop research skills
Across the degree, you'll complete structured research training and work directly with research-intensive academics to learn research-relevant skills. In your final year, you’ll conduct an intensive research project in which you will:
- Complete a literature review
- Assist in designing and planning a research project
- Conduct a full time research project
- Deliver seminars to explain your project and your results
- Produce a thesis based on your findings
This training prepares you to manage, conduct and communicate research effectively – skills essential for both industry and academic careers.
