This international double master's program enables you to complete the requirements of Monash University’s Master of International Development Practice as well as the Master of Arts (Development Studies) degree from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai, India.
Equitable and sustainable human development remains a pressing global concern. Complex socio-political, health, economic, cultural, humanitarian, and ecological challenges contribute to extreme poverty, reduced human development, fragile governance and environmental vulnerability affecting the well-being of millions of people worldwide. These complex, multidimensional challenges require adaptable professionals with the practical skills and analytical capacity to strategically and ethically address them at community, national and global levels.
The Master of International Development Practice offers a multi-disciplinary, applied approach to the theory and practice of sustainable human development. Delivered by specialists across the humanities and social sciences, medicine, business and economics, education and law faculties, the degree delivers rigorous research training alongside the critical and practical skills of project design and management and leadership skills.
You may choose to focus your electives in one of the following streams, designed to help meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
- democracy, justice and governance
- gender, peace and security
- crisis, change management and leadership
- sustainable resource management
- sustainable economies
- global migration
Our graduates can adapt rapidly to changing circumstances while understanding that at the core of development practice are enduring principles of social justice, equity, inclusion, and sustainability. Graduate employment opportunities may include local and international non-government organisations, human rights advocacy, aid agencies, government, social enterprise, corporate social responsibility, the business sector, universities, community organisations, and international institutions such as the United Nations, World Bank and International Migration Organisation.

You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.
Minimum Entry Requirements (International students)
Qualifications
An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a cognate* discipline, with at least distinction (70%) average.
OR
An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) and an Australian graduate certificate (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline*, with at least a credit (60%) average in both qualifications.
*cognate discipline includes humanities or social sciences

Partner with another course
Double degree courses allow you to study towards two different degrees at the same time, and graduate with two separate qualifications. And because a required subject in one course can count as an elective in the other, our double degrees take up to two years less than if you studied for the two degrees separately.

You may apply to transfer from another Monash course. Transfers are a competitive process. You may apply mid-year for available courses however consideration will be given as to whether you will be able to follow your course progression.
Please note that if you apply for a course transfer, you should still enrol in your current course as if you were continuing so as not to jeopardise your enrolment in the Faculty if your transfer application is unsuccessful. More about Course Transfer.

Enrolment Obligations
International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than one third (33%) of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students must enrol in at least one unit that is not by distance and/or online in each compulsory study period unless the student is completing the last unit of their course. See standard 8.19 and 8.20 of National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018.
