The Master of Arts will allow you to undertake substantial independent research on your chosen topic while supported by a minimum of two expert academic supervisors. A Master of Arts requires you to produce a research thesis of up to 40,000 words (or alternative approved outputs). We offer supervision across seven graduate research programs:
- Film, Media, Communications & Journalism
- Historical Studies, including History, Religious Studies, Jewish Studies and Indigenous Studies
- Linguistics & Applied Linguistics
- Literary & Cultural Studies, including Creative Writing, Languages and World Literature, Translation and Interpreting Studies
- Philosophy, including Bioethics
- Social & Political Sciences, including Anthropology, Criminology, Human Geography, Politics & International Relations, Sociology
Gender Studies - Theatre, Performance & Music
Non-traditional research outputs can also be pursued in specialisations in creative writing, music and theatre performance.

Global insight against racism
Dr Susan Carland, Director of the Bachelor of Global Studies & graduate research supervisor, has received a Churchill Fellowship to research how organisations around the globe combat bigotry and how we can use this to target Islamophobia in Australia.
Reconnecting communities with linguistic inheritance
Alice Gaby, Associate Professor of Linguistics and graduate research supervisor, has helped revive some of the many lost and dormant Indigenous languages from communities across Australia.

Fees
Research Training Program (RTP)
This course is supported by the Australian government's Research Training Program (RTP). Under the RTP, domestic students are awarded an RTP Fees Offset which covers the cost of course tuition fees. The estimated annual value of Australian Government support for an RTP Fees Offset is published on the University Graduate Research Scholarships website. The RTP Fees Offset duration is equivalent to the course duration, based on your commencement date and no more than 4 years (FTE) for students enrolled in Doctoral courses and no more than 2 years (FTE) for students enrolled in research Masters courses.
