The Monash Master of Laws (LLM) degree is designed for law graduates wanting to develop in-depth knowledge of a particular legal area or advance their professional expertise in their current field. Regardless of your professional goals, an LLM degree provides you with a springboard to launch or advance your career.
As an LLM Melbourne student, you will expand your professional skills and knowledge of law developments, practice and scholarship across one or more law specialisations. Choose to dive deep into a particular topic or choose a broad range of units based around your interests.
The Monash LLM builds your capacity to undertake independent research and offers options for a pathway into doctoral studies.
Our flexible course structure allows you to complete your Master of Laws degree in 1, 1.5 or 2 years depending on your commitments and existing qualifications.

The Monash LLM offers choice from a wide range of legal areas. You can focus on a specialised area or select from a broad range of electives for professional practice which will enable you to develop in-depth knowledge and advanced skills in areas of law and legal practice that suit your interests, skills and career goals.
You will gain an understanding of law research methods and skills necessary to support law-related work and choose a program of study in which you plan and execute a major research-based project with a high level of personal autonomy and accountability.

You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.
Minimum Entry Requirements (Domestic students)
Qualifications
Entry level 1: 96 points to complete Duration: 2 years full-time | A bachelor degree in law (or equivalent) from a non-Australian jurisdiction. A letter from the Victorian Legal Admissions Board (VLAB) stipulating which areas of law are required to meet the academic eligibility requirements for admission to practice in Victoria. The letter from VLAB must be dated within 24 months of submitting your application for study. |

Entry level 3: 48 points to complete Duration: 1 years full-time | An Australian JD or an Australian bachelor honours degree in Law (or equivalent), OR An Australian bachelor degree in Law (or equivalent) with at least a credit (60%) average and an Australian graduate diploma in Law (or equivalent), OR An Australian bachelor degree in Law (or equivalent) with at least a credit (60%) average and at least 1 year of work based relevant professional experience or other learning approved by the faculty. |
Extra requirements
Applicants will be assessed on their entire academic record, with a credit average (or equivalent) preferred.
Applicants using work experience as part of their application are required to submit their CV and one original employment reference (if you were self-employed, you should submit original references from two clients). You should also provide a URL for your organisation.

Fees are per 48 credit points which represents a standard full-time course load for a year. The fees for 2026 are:
