They work with individuals, families, groups and organisations in a range of settings and have varying roles such as school psychologist, guidance officer, and child and adolescent counsellor. They conduct psychological and educational assessments and instructional planning for exceptional children, adolescents and adults.

The Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology is an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited fifth and sixth-year sequence in psychology and prepares graduates to practise as educational and developmental psychologists in settings including schools, health and welfare services, care facilities, clinics and private practice within business and corporate environments.

The course develops you as an independent specialist with a professional commitment to lifelong learning and application of the theoretical, research, assessment and therapeutic skills related to educational and developmental psychology.

You will develop advanced understanding of, and the skills associated with:

  • human developmental stages and processes throughout the lifespan
  • psycho-educational assessment and treatment approaches for problematic or atypical development
  • advanced therapeutic counselling process and the cycle of effective intervention and change
  • contemporary models of exceptionality and inclusion
  • evidence-based intervention and treatment programs for psychological problems and psychopathology across the lifespan
  • contemporary research and theories of abilities, personality and psychopathology
  • ethical, cultural and professional issues
  • administering and reporting a range of essential psycho-educational assessment instruments for assessing abilities, personality and adjustment of children through  to adults

In addition you will apply theory into practice across the course with 1000 recorded hours of supervised professional experience in a range of settings.

In undertaking a research thesis, you will develop an evidence based approach to psychology, carrying out reviews and scientific investigations relevant to the theory and practice of educational and developmental psychology. As a graduate, you will be qualified to register as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia (PBA). You will also meet most requirements for membership of the College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists of the Australian Psychological Society.

You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.

Minimum Entry Requirements (Domestic students)

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Honours degree or Graduate Diploma in Psychology accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC); as a fourth-year psychology qualification, with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 6.0 in fourth-year psychology (equivalent to a distinction average (70%) at Monash University).

  • The fourth-year qualification must have been completed within 10 years of the commencement date of the course for which admission is sought.
  • Applicants with international qualifications must obtain an assessment from the Australian Psychological Society (APS), confirming that their qualifications are equivalent to Australian APAC-accredited qualifications.

In addition, applicants must provide evidence of their suitability for work as a professional psychologist  through:

  • completion of a supplementary form and satisfactory referee reports (one academic and one professional);
  • relevant voluntary or paid work experience; and
  • if short listed, attend an interview.

Extra Requirements

Mandatory provisional registration

1. Upon commencing the course and before commencing professional experience, you must submit proof of provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA).

2. This registration must be maintained throughout the course.

English language requirements

The Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) requires that any applicant, whether domestic or international, who has completed secondary or tertiary studies in a language other than English must supply IELTS, TOEFL or PTE test results that meet English language requirements for provisional registration as a psychologist before commencing the course. The required entry scores for Monash approved English Tests, including the scores applicable to tests taken before and after 23 April 2026, are specified on the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) website. Owing to PsyBA requirements the test validity period may be shorter than Monash's standard validity period.

Professional experience and clinical placements

1. You must successfully maintain and complete a reflective logbook as part of the course requirements. This must be submitted to be eligible for course completion.

2. This course requires you to undertake off-campus professional experience activities.

3. Attendance is mandatory for the clinical component of each applicable unit. In the clinical setting you will have an opportunity to develop your practice under supervision.

4. Before participating in professional experience/clinical placement in any setting, you must:

  • submit proof of provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia
  • meet specific security clearances that apply in the state/territory where the professional experience is being undertaken
  • complete all professional experience orientation sessions provided by the faculty.

Professional experience expenses

You are responsible for all uniform, equipment, travel, accommodation and any other expenses incurred during professional experience/clinical placement and will be notified regarding purchase arrangements upon commencement.
