About

The Centre for Ancient Cultures seeks to expand students’ awareness and knowledge of the archaeology and history of the ancient Mediterranean. We offer a Bachelor of Arts program in Archaeology and Ancient History (Major, Minor, and Honours degrees) as well as postgraduate study in Ancient Cultures. Our undergraduate degree includes the study of Persia, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Egypt, Greece and Rome from the Bronze Age to the fall of Rome. In collaboration with the Monash Indigenous Studies Centre, students in our Bachelor of Arts major and minor can also study Australian Indigenous archaeology.

We incorporate information from a range of archaeology disciplines including archaeology, history, classics and anthropology. Through this multi-disciplinary approach we create a broad and deep view of the ancient world. The ancient Mediterranean world profoundly influenced our own culture’s understanding of a broad range of disciplines including political science, philosophy, art, theatre, mathematics, astronomy, and engineering. By studying the past, students gain a deeper understanding of the world we live in today.
