Sonographers are healthcare professionals who perform ultrasound scans to help diagnose and monitor medical conditions. These scans may include the abdomen, obstetrics, gynaecology, vascular, musculoskeletal and paediatrics. They work in hospitals and private clinics, often alongside radiologists, obstetricians and other specialists.
Ultrasound is a safe, fast, and non-invasive imaging method widely used in healthcare. It’s essential in areas like pregnancy, cardiology, and emergency care. With growing demand for diagnostic services, trained sonographers are highly sought after for their expertise in capturing and interpreting ultrasound images.

Graduates of the Graduate Diploma or the Master of Medical Ultrasound will be eligible to apply for accreditation with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR), the recognised accreditation body for sonographers in Australia.

Entry Requirements
You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.
This course is available to:
- Domestic students studying in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, or Hong Kong
- International students living and studying offshore in New Zealand, Singapore, and Hong Kong
- Holders of an Australia temporary visa (other than a student visa) that has a full study entitlement
This course is NOT available to International Students currently in Australia on a Student Visa.
Minimum Entry Requirements (Domestic students)
Qualifications
An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in radiography and medical imaging with at least a 60% average.
And
An approved workplace supervised ultrasound clinical training placement
OR
An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a related science or health sciences with at least a 60% average. The related degree must include the studies of "full-body" human anatomy and physiology*. Applicants must also have passed physics at Year 12 or at tertiary level or complete an equivalent physics bridging course.
And
An approved workplace supervised ultrasound clinical training placement.
*Example unit that fulfils this content requirement: BMA1901 - Human structure and function 1
English requirements
Applicants must also meet the English language requirements.

Extra Requirements
Applicants are required to provide an ultrasound clinical placement support letter or other evidence that they have gained a supervised ultrasound clinical training placement. This placement must commence prior to the second semester of the course. To be eligible to complete the applied ultrasound practice units, students must be actively engaged in supervised ultrasound clinical training in the workplace for at least three days a week (or equivalent). Applicants must be living in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, or Hong Kong while studying this course.

- pay all of your student contribution upfront, or
- defer payment through the HECS HELP loan scheme.

The equivalent fee per 48 credit points representing a standard full-time course load for 2026 would be A$36,400
As a full fee-paying student, you may be eligible to apply for the optional FEE-HELP to assist you to pay all or part of your tuition fees.

A limited number of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) are available to eligible applicants.
Note: Applicants for Semester 2 will pay the full-fee amount. CSP places are only available for applicants who are eligible for entry in Semester 1.
