You'll choose between Classical or Jazz and improvisation - each designed to expand your artistry and prepare you for a dynamic and fulfilling career in music.

There are also exciting international opportunities, including a music study program at the Monash Prato Centre in Italy, where you will take part in workshops and projects that encourage critical thinking and creative collaboration. At home, you’ll have the chance to engage with Australia’s rich musical history and cultures, including learning from First Nations artists and communities. Through the Monash Art Ensemble, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate on the creation and performance of innovative newly commissioned works.

Classical Performance
Classical Music at Monash is where tradition meets innovation – a place to refine your craft, develop your artistry, and achieve your fullest potential as a musician, leader, and creative citizen in a rapidly changing world. Through intensive training, rich performance opportunities, and a deep engagement with diverse repertoire, you'll grow as both performer and artist.
You’ll receive weekly one-to-one tuition in your principal instrument or voice, participate in ensembles in every semester of your degree, perform in the Monash Academy Orchestra, and take part in workshops, performance classes, and a range of exciting performance opportunities. You’ll be mentored by renowned musicians through masterclasses, guest artist residencies, and side-by-side performance projects.
The curriculum embraces a broad and inclusive repertoire, from the full sweep of Western Art Music to global traditions and contemporary works. You will engage with Australian repertoire and have opportunities to collaborate with composers on bringing new works to life.

Jazz and Improvisation Performance
Jazz and Improvisation at Monash is a powerhouse for innovation and creativity, grounded in deep listening, collaborative performance and the creation of new Australian music. You’ll be mentored by some of the world’s most acclaimed artists, including Carla Bley, Joe Lovano, Terri Lyne Carrington, Charles Lloyd, Linda May Han Oh, Branford Marsalis, Ingrid Jensen, and Paul Grabowsky.
Your studies will include weekly one-to-one lessons, jazz combo performance and workshops, creative practice workshops, ear training, jazz arranging and composition, Indian rhythms, Brazilian and Latin Jazz ensembles, big band, world music ensembles, and regular performance and recording opportunities alongside staff and leading international and national industry professionals – including the ongoing prestigious Monash Sessions recording series.
