Science and Global Studies - S2003

This course is designed for students who aspire to be leaders in creating social change. Combining global studies with studies in fundamental science will give you the skill set to understand the complex challenges facing cultures and communities around the world and the opportunity to apply your knowledge to affect change. Through this combination, you will not just think globally but study globally as well with overseas travel a requirement of the course.

This course leads to two separate degrees:

the Bachelor of Science, and
the Bachelor of Global Studies.

You will gain all the benefits of each degree course (see Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Global Studies) and be fully equipped to pursue a career drawing on either degree separately or to combine the two in your chosen work.

This flexibility of choice allows you to explore new areas, utilise your critical thinking and analytical skills, further develop your strengths and pursue your own interests. Core units focusing on leadership development, a broad range of multidisciplinary electives and the overseas study component underpin a focus on the practical application of knowledge and skills to real life scenarios.

With this versatile double degree course you'll improve your life and employment opportunities. It offers practical employment skills, including a high level of numeracy, data analysis, information literacy, problem solving, communication and presentation skills, and the ability to work in teams.

The international perspective and highly developed scientific skills you'll gain will help shape careers in international relations or trade, foreign affairs, diplomacy, politics and government, environmental research and planning and international not-for-profit organisations, as well as in traditional and emerging areas of science.

There are many ways to be considered for entry to a Monash University degree depending on your educational background and history. The below options reflect the academic requirements for the different applicant categories (or the highest level of education previously completed) to be considered for this Monash course. All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites.

VET Diploma graduates: Applicants who have completed a science-based diploma will require an average result of at least 60%. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements.

Entire academic record: This course uses the entire academic record as part of its selection considerations.

Any science-based studies used to meet the prerequisite for admission must have been completed within five years of intended commencement.

Applicants with Higher Education Study

All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject prerequisites.

University: Two single units at an Australian higher education institution satisfy minimum entry requirements, but more units may be useful for selection, especially in science areas. Applicants should have at least a 60% average in their studies.

Entire academic record: This course uses the entire academic record as part of its selection considerations.

Any science-based studies used to meet the prerequisite for admission must have been completed within five years of intended commencement.

Part A.

Global studies core

You will compare and contrast a range of global challenges and solutions in different historical, linguistic, cultural, and geographical settings, focussing especially on developing an understanding of effective collaboration, communication and leadership across a range of contexts.

Science specified study

This will expose you to several science disciplines contributing breadth to your understanding of science and giving you the opportunity to learn more about several disciplines before finalising your choice of major. It will also provide you with the mathematical or statistical foundation for your study of science and address the nature of science and its communication.

Part B.

Global studies specialist knowledge

You will gain in-depth knowledge of a specific facet or facets of global studies through units grounded in a wide variety of humanities and social science disciplines. These units will provide you with the practical and theoretical skills needed to critically analyse, communicate and formulate innovative solutions to global challenges.

Science listed major

This will provide you with a focused program of study that will develop your expertise in one discipline area. You will learn to develop, apply and communicate an advanced level of understanding of the concepts and theoretical frameworks that constitute the knowledge base of the discipline.

Part C.

Free elective study - Global Studies

Electives will enable you to further develop your knowledge in the area of global studies, or Arts more generally, or to select units from across the faculty or the University in which you are eligible to enrol.

Free elective study - Science

This will enable you to further develop your knowledge of your chosen major, or the sciences more broadly, or study a second science major. Alternatively, you can select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol.

You may apply to transfer from another Monash course. Transfers are a competitive process. You may apply mid-year for available courses however consideration will be given as to whether you will be able to follow your course progression.
