Monash employs several strategies to enhance communication with students, whether in traditional face-to-face classrooms or in online learning environments. The three main strategies are as follows:

When communicating with students, it is important to craft messages that are clear, concise, and easily understandable. Instructors can effectively convey information and minimise confusion by organising information logically, using bullet points or headings, and keeping the message focused on the main points.
Active listening is a crucial aspect of student communication, even in online settings. Actively listening is important when responding to students’ questions, concerns, and feedback. It involves providing strategies such as giving full attention, paraphrasing or summarising points, and asking clarifying questions. Through active listening, instructors demonstrate empathy, understanding, and foster an open and supportive communication environment.
Although non-verbal cues may be limited in online communication, they still hold significance. It is important to remember how to effectively use non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice. To make good use of non-verbal cues, many educators have incorporated video messages to add a personal touch in student feedback.

When educators prioritise clear and concise messaging, active listening, and leveraging non-verbal cues, they can create a thriving online learning environment where students feel understood, supported, and engaged. These communication strategies are not only effective, but also cultivate a sense of connection and enhance the overall educational experience for both instructors and students.
