Advancing Assessment
Advancing Assessment
Challenging times call for bold approaches. Rather than reaching for simple solutions, we are reforming assessment to make more credible claims about what our students know and can do, and to ensure alignment of what we assess with what we value as educators, as an institution, and as a society. This also means grounding our approach to assessment in sound educational principles, knowledge of our students, our local and disciplinary contexts, and educational research. We call this work Advancing Assessment.
The Vision for Advancing Assessment
The Monash University vision for assessment, developed in consultation across faculty education leadership, centres on supporting and evidencing meaningful learning rather than on security or compliance. It argues for a shift from technical measurement towards evidence-informed, programmatic approaches that engage with, support, guide and evaluate students' developing capabilities across a range of encounters and evidence over time. AI is treated not as a threat but as part of a wider context students need to navigate critically. The vision calls for sustained investment in educators' practices and professional judgement, so that assessment builds trust, strengthens educational relationships, and produces valuable learning experiences alongside evidence-informed claims about student capability.
Realising the Vision
We are working hard across the university to realise this vision. It will be a long road, but the work is well underway. Assessment is never perfect, and these approaches will continue to evolve. We welcome discussion with the Monash community as we iterate.
