You can embed audio and video into Moodle with the insert media icon or Panopto icon in the text editor in various resources and activities. Some ways you could use video in your Moodle unit include:
Embedding a welcome message for students
Embedding a screencast to provide a visual demonstration / walkthrough
Embedding audio files to create weekly podcasts.
You can also embed audio or video file in the section summary page of your unit home page
Embed video with Panopto
The Panopto icon allows you to record, insert or upload video content and directly embed it to Moodle. You can upload videos of any length and size and Panopto can also automatically generate captions from your audio. If your unit has not already been provisioned, you will first need to Add the Panopto block.
Navigate to the location in Moodle where you would like to embed a video.
Click on the Panopto icon in any text editor in Moodle. For example, you could upload your zoom recording to a page, label or section in Moodle.
An Insert from Panopto window will appear.
From the Insert from Panopto window, select the Upload tab.
Drag and drop your Zoom recording file into the dashed box or click to browse your computer for your recording. Your Zoom recordings can be found the your Documents folder, under Zoom. Your recordings will be categorised in folders by the date and time they were recorded.
Note: Make sure you select the zoom_#.mp4 file. Mp4 files will contain both the video and audio recording of your Zoom session.
Your file will begin uploading, as indicated by the green progress bar.
Once uploading is complete, your file will begin processing. You can click Insert while your file is still processing. It will be embedded into Moodle and ready for viewing when it has finished processing.
Note: The upload and processing speed will depend on your file size.
Panopto will use the file name as the Panopto video name. You can rename this at anytime by viewing the recording in full screen in the Panopto viewer. Click on the name to edit it and then hit enter to save your changes.
You may want to use an existing video on Youtube as a learning resource in your Moodle unit. You can embed a youtube video in any text editor in Moodle for example on a page, label or section in Moodle. There are a few ways you can do this depending on how you would like the Youtube video to be displayed.
You can easily embed a video using the multimedia icon in the Moodle text editor. It will display the video centre aligned, as shown below. The video will also be stripped of Youtube's default settings, such as show captions and video chapters.
Navigate to the youtube video you would like to embed on your page.
Copy the video URL using CTRL+C(PC) or ⌘+C(MAC).
In Moodle, navigate to where you would like to embed the Youtube video.
In the text editor, place your cursor where you would like to insert the Youtube video.
Select the multimedia icon. The Insert media pop-up window will appear.
Select the video tab.
In Video source URL, paste the Youtube video link and click Insert media.
When you are finished, click Save and return to unit or Save and display.
The Youtube video should now be embedded in Moodle.
Note: If you would like to display the Youtube video as a hyperlink and not embedded in Moodle, for example as a link in a body of text, see Display Youtube video as a link without embedding it (below).
Embedding a YouTube video with HTML code will display the video aligned left and slightly larger than if added as a hyperlink, as shown below. The default YouTube video controls, such as show captions, will also be retained. To use this method, it is recommended that you have a basic understanding of HTML.
Navigate to the youtube video you would like to embed on your page.
Below the video, click on Share. This will open the Share options window.
Click Embed.
Copy the code by clicking Copy or by highlighting the text and using CTRL+C or ⌘+C(MAC).
In Moodle, navigate to where you would like to embed the Youtube video.
In the text editor, Click on the Edit HTML icon.
Note: If you do not see the Edit HTML icon, click on the expand toolbar icon in the top left of the text editor. (Top: TinyMCE editor(default), Below: ATTO editor)
Paste the Youtube embed code in the HTML window and click Update.
When you are finished, click Save and return to unit or Save and display.
The Youtube video should now be embedded in Moodle.
By default, if you add a Youtube video as a hyperlink, the Moodle text editor will display it embedded in the Moodle page. If you would like to display the Youtube video as a hyperlink and not embedded in Moodle, for example as a link in a body of text, follow the instructions below.
Navigate to the youtube video you would like to embed on your page.
Copy the Youtube video URL using CTRL+C(PC) or ⌘+C(MAC).
In Moodle, navigate to where you would like to add a link to the Youtube video.
In the text editor, highlight the text which you will use to link to the Youtube video and select the Hyperlink icon.
In Enter a URL, paste the Youtube video URL.
Insert "embed=no&" into the Youtube URL between "watch?" and "v=". This will force Moodle to present the linked text as text, rather than converting it to embedded video.
Click Create link.
When you are finished, click Save and return to unit or Save and display.
The Youtube video should now be added as a hyperlink in Moodle.
Embed quiz questions into a video
You can easily embed a quiz within a video to greatly focus the learning, prompt students to test their knowledge on the topic, reinforce key concepts, improve knowledge retention to provide a more interactive and engaging learning experience. You can create interactive quizzes inside Panopto videos or Youtube videos using Panopto (guide), H5P (guide) or Echo360 (guide). For a brief overview and comparison, see Interactive videos.
Accessibility tips
It is strongly recommended that all video/audio be accompanied by text transcripts to provide the same information to users that cannot access the video/audio.
