Unit and Assessment Report

The Unit and Assessment Report is available to staff with the Chief Examiner role in ELMS or staff with existing access to faculty BOE reports in Power BI.

The Unit and Assessment report features the following data:

Unit grade distribution
Grade distribution per assessment task
Average mark by unit location and teaching mode.

The report sources data directly from Enterprise Moodle and is updated at 8:00pm (AEST) every day (7 days) and is visible within the reports from 9.00am (AEST). The following browsers are supported: Chrome desktop (latest version), Safari Mac (latest version), Firefox desktop (latest version), Microsoft Edge Chromium, Internet Explorer 11.

Report access

Click on the link https://app.powerbi.com/groups/me/apps to navigate to your Power BI apps page.
Click on DES - Unit & Assessment to open the reports.
Tip: Once access has been granted, it is recommended that you bookmark the Unit and Assessment report link in your browser for easy access.

Key features of the Power BI report interface View

There are a number of key features in the Power BI report interface. Click on each plus icon to read more about the different elements and functionality or a read a text-based version below. Click on the icon in the top right corner to view in full screen (recommended).

Take a moment to review this if you are not familiar with the Power BI reporting interface.

1. Pages panel: Lists all of the pages available for viewing in this report. This panel can be expanded/collapsed. The current page you are viewing is highlighted. Navigate between report pages using these page links.
2. Report banner: The banner displays the name of the report and the last updated date.
3. Action bar: Contains actions that can be utilised on this report including Print and Export.
4. Main reporting area: The main report area features many visuals including the title of the report, report filter options, chart and tabled data.
5. Filters: Collapsed by default, this filter area can be expanded and contains advanced report filtering options. Filters that have been applied to the report page, or to the entire report, are displayed here. You can change these filters as required to see the impact on your visuals and report.
6. Last Refresh Date: Indicates when the data was last updated in this report.
7. Reset icon: This button enables the ability to revert back to the original default view of the report. It resets any filters, slicers and other data view changes you have made.
8. Bookmarks: You have the ability to save a personal filtered view of the report as a bookmark. Many bookmarks can be created.
9. View: Enables ability to adjust the report size to suit your viewing screen. Includes ability to switch to Full Screen mode, Fit to Page (default), Fit to width and Actual size.

Actions menu for a visual

Hovering over a report visual (for example a table or bar chart) in the main reporting area reveals actions you can take on that visual.

The drill arrow buttons can be used for drilling in the data displayed in a visual on the report page. Drilling data allows you to explore another level of detail down. For example drilling down on a unit code EDF4100 will display data at the next level down for EDF4100 CLAYTON and EDF4100 PENINSULA.
The expand to next level icon will drill all elements in the visual to the lowest level of data available for that visual.
To return to the top level of data at any time click the drill up icon.
In the report page you have the ability to copy any visual and paste it into a document as required. Click on Copy visual as image button. When your visual is ready, an alert will appear ‘Your visual is ready to copy’ with a Copy to clipboard button. Click this button, then paste your image using “Ctrl + V” or “right-click > Paste” into any document as required.
To see the filters applied to a specific visual, select the Filter icon. This will display the filters that are currently set for that visual display. To modify a filter you can use the Filter panel on the right hand side of the report page.
Focus mode lets you expand (pop out) a visual or tile to see more detail. This feature is useful when the visual is a little crowded and you want to zoom in on only that one visual.
To open a report visual in focus mode, hover over the visual and select the Focus mode icon.
To return to the report, select Back to report from the upper left corner.
There are some additional actions that can be taken for a visual. Click on the More options icon to display additional options.
You can export data that is currently displayed in the visual. This export shows you only the data (columns and measures) that are being used to create the visual.
Click on the Export data icon and the Export data dialog opens. Select file format, either .xlsx or .csv and click the Export button to commence download. When you select Export, your browser prompts you to save the file. Once saved, open the file in Excel. Note that the first row of the excel spreadsheet shows the filters that were applicable in the visual when extracting the data.
Remember to store student personal data securely and delete it after use.
A visual in a report constructed using data from underlying datasets. Using the Show as a table icon, you can display the data that is being used to create a visual in a report. The report page will display the table data below (or next to) the visual.
To change the orientation, select vertical layout from the top-right corner of the visual. To return to the report, select Back to report from the upper left corner.
With spotlight, you can draw attention to a specific visual on a report page. Please note that if the spotlight mode is selected when you add a bookmark, that mode is retained in the bookmark. The selected visual is highlighted, which causes all other visuals on the page to fade to near transparency.

Home

The home page features the report title, description and contact point for feedback and enquiries. It is the first page that displays by default for this report. Also referenced on this page is the last report refresh date timestamp. The report is refreshed once daily. To navigate to different pages of the report, use the Pages panel on the left hand side of the report. The current page you are viewing is highlighted in the list of pages.

Report global filters

The Unit & Assessment report features a set of filters that are visible at the top of the page and are applicable to all report pages. These filters persist as you navigate between report pages.

If you close the report browser window and navigate back to the report in a new browser window, these filters will be set back to defaults (i.e. your filter settings are not retained between browser sessions). Ensure that the filters for Calendar and Assessment year at the top of the page are set to the correct assessment period.

Reset icon
This button enables the ability to revert to the default view of the report. It resets any filters, slicers and other data view changes you have made.

Clear selection
You can also reset a specific filter by hovering over the filter and selecting the clear selection icon.

Assessment Grade Distribution

To view the Assessment Grade Distribution Report, select Assessment Grade Distribution from the Pages panel on the left hand side of the page. This report displays the grade distribution of all assessment items in a given unit offering.

For Select a unit view, type in or select the unit code for the unit reports you would like to view. Units are listed alphabetically.
The summary tiles display at a glance:
- The number of student enrolled in the unit
- The average pass rate for the unit
- The average mark for all students in the unit
You can hover over the tile to view bar charts that show the average historical statistics for past teaching periods.
The Grade results summary displays the number of students that have failed or passed the unit.
Note: Incomplete results mean that no results have been returned for a particular student.
The Grade Distribution summary displays a bar graph that shows the percentages of students that have achieved each grade in the unit. Hover over the bar chart for a grade to view a breakdown of the distribution of marks within that grade.
The unit mode/class displays all teaching modes for the unit as per the assessment calendar and year in which that unit was offered. The bar chart highlights the volume of grades returned per unit mode offered. Underneath the X symbol in the bar chart, the average mark for that unit per mode is displayed.
The unit location displays all teaching location/s for the unit as per the assessment calendar and year in which that unit was offered. The bar chart highlights the volume of grades returned per unit location. Underneath the X symbol in the bar chart, the average mark for that unit per location is displayed.
The Assessment Grade Distribution table displays all student grades in the unit, calculated as a percentage based on the final grade and maximum grade for the assessment item (final grade / maximum grade) and are grouped into the following bins: 0-44%, 45-49%, 50-59%, 60-69%, 70-79%, 80-89%, 90-100%. Scale type grade items are included in this distribution for Mon-Scale (Competent and Non-Competent values only) and will be displayed accordingly.
You can expand each assessment row to view the breakdown of grades across multiple locations, if applicable.
You can click on the toggle to view a bar graph that displays the percentages of student grades based on the final grade as displayed in the grader report. Hover over the bar chart for a grade to view additional information.

Student Assessment Performance Report

To view the Student Assessment Performance Report, select Student Assessment Performance from the Pages panel on the left hand side of the page. The Student Assessment Performance Report provides data about the assessment performance for all students in the unit for all assessments. You can filter results in a number of different ways.

For Select a unit view, type in or select the unit code for the unit reports you would like to view. Units are listed alphabetically.
The quick filter option tiles allow you to quickly view the number of students in the unit that:
- Achieved an assessment outcome of less than 50% in at least one assessment
- Achieved an assessment outcomes of less than 50% and failed the unit
- Failed a hurdle
You can click on the tile to quickly filter the assessment table to show students who fell under the specified category.
You can use the filter results to view a subset of your students, for example if you want to only view those who have failed or achieved HDs. You can use the filters to:
- select only those students within a grade range.
- View results for a specific student or specific assignment.
This table displays data about the assessment performance for all students in the unit for all assessments.
This column in the assessment grade distribution table displays the student's final grade as shown in the unit total in the grader report.
This column in the assessment grade distribution table displays the student's final grade as shown in results management page.

Assessment Details Report

The Assessment Detail page provides assessment grade distribution data via an interactive table for all assessment items within a unit. The units you can view in this table are determined as per your level of access enabled within this report. The filters you set for the table will influence the data that is displayed accordingly. You can hover over any field to view more information.

Export reports

To export the page to PDF, click on Export from the main menu, then PDF.
Select the checkbox for Only export the current page then click Export.
