Bento Boxes

Bento Boxes are pre-configured collections of activities and resources in Moodle designed to support rich asynchronous active learning for students.

Each Bento offers a pedagogically designed learning sequence that will generally take a student between 1-2 hours to complete. They give you a learning activity skeleton to customise with concepts from your teaching unit. Depending on the Bento, you will need to replace existing placeholder content and instructions with those relevant to the unit.

Why Bento Box?

Bento Boxes are designed to meet a wide range of pedagogical needs, from remembering knowledge to creating new outcomes. They're designed for academics with an intermediate skill level when using Moodle. Depending on the Bento you select, you may be required to edit activities, insert URL to external sources and hide/unhide sections from Student view.

The pedagogy behind Bentos

Asynchronous active learning puts the emphasis on students interacting with unit content online. Self-paced opportunities for students to think about their learning and apply it by using a wide range of multimedia tools encourages course involvement, develops problem-solving and interpersonal skills.

Bentos are designed to utilise a progression of skills as identified in Bloom's taxonomy. Students are encouraged to master lower order thinking skills such as classifying and applying course material before utilising skills such as analysing and evaluating course material.

A learning sequence refers to a sequence of tasks aimed at producing a particular learning objective, goal or intention. Bentos has been designed for students to progress through each set of tasks gaining knowledge progressively to apply online, either independently or in a small group.
